College Men’s Golf Results – Guilford Fourth After 36 Holes at Gordin Classic

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Guilford College’s men’s golf team sits in fourth place among 12 teams after two round of the Gordin Classic. The Quakers shot 290-296-586 and trail 36-hole leader St. John Fisher College by 10 strokes. Methodist University and Wittenberg University share second place with matching scores of 582.

The teams played 36 holes Monday at the par-72, Columbus Country Club. Hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University since 1991, the Gordin Classic annually matches 12 of the best NCAA Division III teams, featuring most — if not all — of the top-10 finishers from the previous spring’s NCAA Division III Championships. This year’s tourney has 11 teams that placed among the top-20 in the 2012 national tournament. The tournament is named after longtime Ohio Wesleyan coach Dick Gordin.

Junior Drew Thompson, playing in his native Ohio, shot 74-70 for an even-par 144 that shares third place in the 60-man field. Thompson birdied his final two holes in the second round to come in two-under par. Guilford rookie Ty Palmer (Kernersville, N.C./Forsyth Country Day) made his college debut with a 70 in Monday’s first round and a 75 in the second. He shares sixth place on the individual leader board (145) and is one shot ahead of classmate Tanner Gross (Archdale, N.C./Homeschooled) who shot 70-76-146. Senior Dallas Page (Reidsville, N.C./Rockingham County (Averett)) scored twice for Guilford with a 76-75-151. Travis Tolbert shot 83-77-160 for the Quakers.

The tournament concludes Tuesday (10/1). Guilford tees off at 8:30 a.m. in a group that includes Transylvania University and Southwestern University.
