Greensboro College Men’s Soccer Tops Christopher Newport 2-1

NEWPORT NEWS, VA—The Greensboro College Pride men’s soccer team ended their four game road trip on Wednesday night with a 2-1 victory over The Captains of Christopher Newport.

Christopher Newport got the scoring started early in the first half, with a goal in the 11th minute by Ryan Balfour to give them a 1-0 lead. That would be the only score of the half, so Greensboro would go into the half down 1-0.

In the second half, The Pride would control the pace of play. In the 55th minute of the game, Earl Floyd collected a ball on the right side of the box from Kyle Giscombe and beat The Captains keeper to tie the score at 1-1. From that point in the game, both teams would go back and forth until Scott Fatyol won a 50/50 ball at the top of the box and scored from 22 yards out in the 72nd minute to give Greensboro the go ahead goal.

For Greensboro, they would out shoot Christopher Newport in the game 13-9, including a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal. Manbi Nyepon would pick up the victory for Greensboro in goal, making four saves on the day.

Following the big win, Coach Trice had this to say, “I am very proud of our group. Christopher Newport University is one of the toughest places to play in this region. We matched their energy, were committed to defending, and created & finished our chances. Now we must translate this to our upcoming conference games!”

With the win, The Pride men’s soccer team will move to 5-4-2 on the season. Greensboro will return to USA South play on Saturday, October 5, when they welcome The Scots of Maryville to Pride Field. Game time is set for 4:00 pm.
