McKay Tye Finishes One-Under Par To Lead HPU Men’s Golf

NINETY SIX, S.C. – The High Point University men’s golf team finished third out of four teams in a one-round quad-match with Gardner-Webb, Radford and Campbell on Saturday at The Patriot at Grand Harbour in Ninety Six, S.C. Sophomore McKay Tye was one-under par with a 71 as HPU’s top finisher.

“It was a beautiful day and the course was in great condition,” said head coach Greg Flesher. “Our young team continues to play well and show improvement every weekend. We played about 14 holes excellent and need to clean up the last few. As a team we had 13 birdies and one eagle which is a great start on the course where the Big South Championship will be.”

Gardner-Webb won the event, with a team score of 281. Campbell was just six strokes back in second place with a total score of 287, followed by High Point, 287, and Radford, 294.

GWU’s Blake Maum carded a four-under 68 to win the event. His teammate Vincent Blanchette and Campbell’s Mikko Lehtovuori tied for second with three-under 69. Tye came in tied for fourth with Campbell’s Amanjyot Singh.

For Tye, it was his third round under par for the 2013 season. It is also his highest place finish of the season.

Freshman David Long carded an even-par 72 to finish tied for seventh on the day. Freshman Jack Sides and junior LJ Georgetti tied for 12th with a two-over 74. It ties the lowest round of the season for Georgetti.

Freshman Phil Oweida rounded out HPU’s team scoring with a 76. Junior Tyler Engel shot a 79, competing as an individual.

The Panthers will be back on the course on Oct. 14 t the Donald Ross Intercollegiate at Mimosa Hills in Morganton, N.C.
