Women’s Soccer: Guilford 4, Sweet Briar 2

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sophomore Kelli Uresti scored three first-half goals to lead Guilford to its first victory of the season, a 4-2 win over the Sweet Briar Vixens in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) tilt Saturday afternoon at the Armfield Athletic Center.

The Quakers (1-12, 1-5 ODAC) pushed the attack early but were unable to cash in on several chances in the first five minutes. Despite controlling most of the action from the opening kick, they actually fell behind early, as Sweet Briar (2-5-1, 0-5 ODAC) took advantage of an early corner kick to score a goal, with Nina Peck giving the Vixens a 1-0 lead.

But 30 seconds later, Uresti tied the game and two minutes later she gave Guilford a lead it would not relinquish.

Caroline Bishop upped the lead to 3-1 at the 15-minute mark, scoring off a pass from Uresti. The Vixens cut the deficit to one goal after a Grayson Murphy score but Uresti completed her first-half hat trick two minutes before intermission, after being set up by Madalyn Carpenter.

Neither team scored in the second half.

Abby Gove made seven saves en route to her first win of the year. Katie Tilson turned back 13 shots in a losing effort for Sweet Briar.

The Quakers return to action Wednesday, October 9th when they travel to Lynchburg for a 7:00 pm ODAC game.
