from the Guilford County School Board site:
Western Football Stadium Named for Doug Henderson
The Guilford County Board of Education approved naming the football stadium at Western High “Henderson Stadium” in honor of a former football and track coach.
Doug Henderson served as a coach at Western High from 1972 to 1989. Under his leadership, the football team at Western won the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) state 3A championship in 1977. Henderson also led the initiative to pave the track at Western with the help of boosters and a local bank. He has served as the former president of the North Carolina Coaches Association and as a coach in the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas. He was inducted into the NCHSAA Hall of Fame Class of 2012.
The approval comes after an 11-day public comment period. At its Sept. 26 meeting, the board approved naming the football field at Western after longtime coach Joe Robinson. Robinson started with Western when the school opened in 1968. He taught civics, history and driver’s education and served as the head football coach.
Many thanks to Andy for getting the word out. Also all the comments made to the school board from the Western Guilford alumni and folks well beyond the community.
HAD SOME GREAT TEAMS BACK IN THE 80’S WITH THE RALEIGH’S AND MORRIS’S.
WELL DESERVING.
