College Men’s Golf Results – Guilford Eighth After Round One of Golfweek Invitational

SANDESTIN, Fla. – Freshman Tanner Gross (Archdale, N.C./Homeschooled) shot a one-under-par 70 to lead Guilford College’s golf team to a share of eight place after Sunday’s first round of the Golfweek DIII Fall Invitational at the Raven Golf Club. Oglethorpe University shot an even-par 284 Sunday and holds a two-shot edge over LaGrange College in the 18-team field.

Guilford shot 295 Sunday and sits 11 shots off the lead in the 54-hole tournament. Gross is third among 90 individuals after playing the par-71, 6,505-yard course at one under. He made three birdies and one bogey on his first nine holes and played his last nine one-over. Gross is in a seven-way tie for third, two shots behind co-leaders Anthony Maccaglia of Oglethorpe and Millsaps College’s Ryan Henry, both of whom shot 69 Sunday.

Rookie Brad White made his college debut for Guilford and shot 73. He was even through 16 holes before a double-bogey five on the eighth hole. White is in a share of 27th place. The Quakers’ Drew Thompson, Ty Palmer (Kernersville, N.C./Forsyth Country Day) and Dallas Page (Reidsville, N.C./Rockingham County (Averett)) each shot 76 Sunday and share 50th place among the leaders.

The tournament features eight teams ranked among the top-20 squads in the latest Golfstat.com NCAA Division III Head-to-Head Ratings, including the third-ranked Quakers. It concludes Tuesday, Oct. 15.
