Men’s Soccer: Guilford 2, Chowan 1 (OT)

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Matthew Poling scored with nine seconds left in the first overtime to lift Guilford to a 2-1 (OT) victory over Division II Chowan Sunday afternoon at the Armfield Athletic Center.

Guilford (5-6-2) played to a tie last time out and seemed headed for its second straight double-overtime contest. But Poling collected a loose ball in front of the net and fired it past a screened-off goalie for the winning score.

Chowan (0-10) came in winless but they scored right away to put the Quakers on their heels. Deale Pearson fired in a goal from the right side with just 1:48 gone in the game.

However, Guilford was able to tie the game just 10 minutes later when Christian Torres scored off a corner kick.

The Quakers dominated the game, as they outshot the Braves, 36-12, and had the edge in corner kicks, 18-1. But Guilford was unable to put one in the net. Jax Eddleman made 10 saves for Chowan. Marko Mandalinic earned his first win of the season by turning back six shots.

Coach Jeff Bateson’s squad returns to action Saturday at ODAC foe Emory & Henry, with a 7:00 pm start.
