GC Pride Volleyball Drops Final Non-Conference Match of Season

LYNCHBURG, VA — The Greensboro College Pride volleyball team returned to action on Monday night against Randolph College. The Pride XXXX to the Wildcats in the match by a score of X_X.

In the first game of the match, Randolph would take the first two points of before Greensboro would regain the serve. The Pride would run the score even at two, then the Wildcats went on a 4-0 run to make the score 6-2. Following the fourth point, Coach McDuffie called a time out to try to get The Pride back into the game. After the timeout, Greensboro pulled within 7-4 before Randolph would go on another run to make the score 13-4 before Dallas Hasty put down a kill to get the serve back at 13-5. Bari Tressler checked into the game to serve for The Pride and brought the score back to within 13-8 and forced Randolph to use their first time out. The Wildcats regained the serve following the break, but Greensboro was able to take it back and go on a 6-3 run to bring the score to 16-13. Following The Pride run, Randolph would extend the score back out again, forcing Greensboro to take their second timeout at 21-16. Randolph would go on to win the first game of the match 25-19.

After falling the in the first game, Greensboro opened the second game with a 4-0 run, to take and early lead. Greensboro added on to their lead at 5-1, before the Wildcats rallied back to even the game at 5-5. After tying the score, Randolph used a four point run to make the score 9-6 before Greensboro regained the side. Greensboro came right back to tie the game at 9-9. Both teams went back and forth with neither team able to get the edge until The Pride got the lead at 17-15, forcing the Wildcats coach to use a timeout. After the Randolph time out, the Wildcats clawed their way back into the game bringing the score to 18-18 before The Pride pushed the lead to 20-18 forcing Randolph to use their second timeout. Following the timeout Greensboro went on a 5-2 to close out and win the game 25-20 to even the match at a game apiece.

With the match tied at one game apiece, both teams traded points with each other, before Greensboro used a four point run to push the lead in their favor at 10-7. The Pride forced the Wildcats coach to use and early time out, and his team responded with a 5-0 run to take the lead at 14-13. Coach McDuffie was not happy with the way her team came out of the break, so she used a timeout as well. Randolph pushed the lead to 16-14, and then The Pride went on a 4-1 run to gain the lead at 18-17. Randolph brought the score to 19-19 when Dallas Hasty put the ball away to give to Greensboro a 20-19 lead. Randolph responded with two straight points to take a 21-20 lead, followed by The Pride taking their second timeout of the game. Randolph came out of the timeout and pushed the lead to 24-20 before Greensboro fought back to bring the game to 23-23 before the Wildcats closed out the game 25-23 to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

In the must win fourth set for The Pride, Randolph took the opening four point to take a 4-0 lead before a serving miscue gave the serve to Greensboro. However the Wildcats got the serve right back and made another four point run making the score 8-2. After falling behind 8-2, Greensboro responded back winning six of the next eight points to bring the score within two at 10-8. Following the Greensboro run, Randolph responded with 4-1 run to make the score 14-9, resulting in a Greensboro timeout. After the timeout break, the Wildcats used a 6-3 run to extend their lead to 20-12. The Pride made a 3-0 run to bring the score within five at 20-15 before Randolph moved the score to 22-16. With Randolph two points from closing out the match, Greensboro went on four point run behind the serve of Megan Smtih to bring the score to 23-21. Dispite all the efforts for The Pride, Randolph won the next two point to win the game and match 25-21.

For Greensboro, Liz Widenhouse and Dallas Hasty contributed a team high 15 kills. Cortland Phillps passed for 40 assists, while Phillips, Hasty, and Carissa McCumber had 14 digs.

With the loss on the day, Greensboro falls to 9-15 on the season. The Pride will return to USA South action on Wednesday night when they welcome William Peace. This game is also Dig Pink, which is a fundraiser for breast cancer research. At the game, you can serve for great prizes or enter a raffle.
