HPU Men’s Golf Sixth At Donald Ross Intercollegiate

Morganton, N.C. – Freshman David Long led the High Point University men’s golf team on the first day of the Donald Ross Intercollegiate at Mimosa Hills in Morganton, N.C. on Monday. Long carded an even-par 140 through the first two rounds of the tournament to help HPU sit in sixth place with one round to play.

“We had a rough start to the day, going four or five over on the first few holes,” said head coach Greg Flesher. “But the team did a great job to make adjustments and finish the day really strong. In the second round we had four guys go 72 or lower which shows the tremendous talent on our young team. Heading in to tomorrow we need to be a little more conservative with some of our shots but I am very excited to see how we play in the final round.”

The Panthers were ninth with a team score of 288 after the first round, led by Sophomore McKay Tye with an even-par round of 70. Tye recovered from a tough start, going +3 on the first whole to finish even for the round. Sides and Long finished right behind Tye at plus one and plus two, respectively. HPU moved up three spots in the second round, to sit sixth with 18 holes to play.

High Point took six strokes off their team score to post a 282 in the second round. Long led the charge with a two-under 68 in the second round to finish with a score of 140 for the day. For Long, the single-round 68 and 36-hole score of 140 are collegiate bests. He is tied for 13th. Tye continued his consistent play this season, shooting a one-over 141 (70-71) on Monday which is tied for 17th.

Freshman Jack Sides posted scores of 71 and 72 in the first two rounds to finish three-over with a score of 143 for the day. Freshman Phil Oweida shot a 75 in the opening round, and posted a four-stroke improvement in the second round with a career-low 71. He finished the day tied for 43rd with another career-best, 146.

Junior LJ Georgetti also showed a huge improvement between rounds, carding an 89 in the morning and a 79 in the afternoon.

The final round of the Donald Ross Intercollegiate will tee off on Tuesday morning.
