P.J. Hairston(Dudley HS) pays off final traffic fines and Roy Williams on Hairston from Charlotte today

P.J. Hairston(Dudley HS/North Carolina Tar Heels) has paid off his final traffic fines/violations and he has that piece of business behind him, as he heads into the 2013/2014 ACC Basketball season and to see all and learn more on this one, CLICK HERE…..Taking you to WRALSportsFan.com…..

North Carolina men’s basketball coach Roy Williams in Charlotte today for the ACC Basketball Media Day and he said P.J. has done everything he asked him to do/told him to do and he handled the situation as a way to give Hairston another chance to redeem himself and to let him come back and prove himself to the Tar Heel family….Williams said P.J. is still a kid in many ways and that kids make mistakes and that as a teacher, even more so than a coach, you have to allow for mistakes and give the student-athlete another opportunity to grow and to prove themself….Williams said you have to be forgiving when working with young people and that there are many different ways to to teach kids lessons of importance, even in today’s society……Williams said he has been surprised by the reaction of the general public to the punishment that he served up to P.J. Hairston, as his means/way of allowing P.J to return to the team and to return to Tar Heel basketball practice…..(P.J. has been forced to run, run, run and then run some more, as his initial mode/means of behavioral correction.)

More on this part here, when you CLICK HERE for the News and Record blog on today’s events in Charlotte with Ed Hardin and Mark Thompson on hand representing the N&R…..

Details on what Roy Wiliams was saying today from the radio interviews, from the News and Record and from WRALSportsFan.com….Haven’t had the chance to look at Charlotte Observer at this point…..I feel certain P.J. Hairston will be reaching out to us, here at GreensboroSport.com, in the days and nights to follow…..

  1. oh gimmee a freakin break. He made him follow legal procedures that all other law-breaking drivers follow and made him run some more laps and that’s supposed to restitution? Please… all that did was get him in better shape. Anyone with 1/3 of a brain can see that.

Roy you’re ruining his life by not teaching him accountability for the sake of your job. Hope your conscience can live with that.

People that care for and are close to PJ (more than Carolina basketball wins) ought to be speaking out. But they are likely just waiting for the NBA contract to kick in.

  2. Roy Williams at today’s ACC Media Day on the P.J. Hairston situation and I heard this one on the radio this afternoon and it has also been made available at several web sites including N&R.com and WRALSportsFan.com….

“It’s a different world than it was 10 years ago and 20 years ago,” Williams said, referring specifically to social media. “It’s been almost a hatred thing at some points, but I’m not saying he didn’t do anything wrong. There’s no question. … But the intensity of the disagreement of every maneuver has been very hard to handle.”

  3. But we can’t discuss why Causey is still coaching at WG or the smoke signals coming out of Northern Guilford’s athletic programs. Andy, you shut down a blog post to comments (post had 70 comments) just this past Saturday evening and left with the parting shot that we needed to be more positive and to use Sunday to find those positives………how is all this coverage on PJ’s off court issues supporting your position that your blog needs to be more positive??

    Sounds rather contradictory………..

  4. The reality is that “none of us” (meaning outside of close friends or family) really know PJ or what he was doing the night that he was stopped in Durham. Other than being with “questionable” character people and getting stopped for a speeding situation, the kid did not really do anything too bad. There is nothing Roy is doing to hurt this kids life but what he is doing will hopefully wait him up to the opportunity that a UNC program can provide for him. There are doors that UNC can open that 99.9% of us reading this message can only dream about short of buying a ticket or watching on TV. Keeping such opportunities available to kids is the best decision Roy/UNC could have made for PJ. It is not like there are 100’s of other kids walking around UNC, the state or Greensboro that could take advance of this opportunity. PJ and UNC will get past this moment, PJ’s life will move forward and hopefully provide a good financial future for his family, UNC supporters will eventually cheer his return and move on, and the UNC haters will always hate the decision regardless of what Roy did or did not do.

Just as the old saying “well that is somebodies kid so give them a chance”. Well I would also add that everyone is from somewhere and PJ is from here so I want the kid to make a positive name for himself insist of the difficult path taken. In the end, it will benefit PJ’s future life and our community in general as he gets the opportunity to come back and help other kids walk their path.

  5. Much more open discussion about college players than you will find with high school…

College is a higher level and the players are older and should be ready more ready for the public opinions….

High school guys and their surroundings are like young kids and the college setting is more like big kids…

Roy Williams will tell you that….

  6. This is something I saw on a different website

From Roy Williams biography “Hard Work” on former player Sean Tunstall:

“I did something I have always fought against as a coach, which is disciplining someone by taking away the one thing that he is successful at. But I took basketball away from Sean. His grades got worse. He left school, got involved with drugs, and landed in jail. Shortly after Sean got out of jail, he was shot and killed in a drug deal gone bad. Sean’s story is the reason that if I think there’s any hope, I’ll stick with a kid longer than most coaches might, because I’m mad about the way I handled that. Sean was a good kid. At the time I thought I was doing the right thing for him, but now I think, what if I’d let Sean play and just run him after every practice? Would that have saved his life? I’ll never stop wishing I could do that one over again.”

“I’m definitely not saying the same result would happen with PJ if he was kicked off the team. But maybe Roy feels very strongly on this subject matter and a little cautious to just kick a kid off the team who needs basketball, and more importantly needs to be a part of a team to stay challenged?”

  8. Roy is waiting to hear from us as to how many games PJ will miss. Also, look for Leslie McDonald to also miss games. We are checking into the rental cars provided these players(and maybe more than these 2)by Mr. Thomas.
