GREENSBORO, N.C. — Guilford College’s men’s golf team jumped 10 spots to fourth in the third Golf World/Nike Golf Division III Coaches’ Poll of the fall season released Monday. The rankings were made by members of the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) and included tournaments through October 16. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges and Wittenberg College moved into a tie for the top spot with 373 points. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps earned eight first-place votes, while Wittenberg received five first-place nods. Illinois Wesleyan University rounds out the top three, receiving one first-place vote.
The Quakers placed third in their last competition at the Golfweek Fall Invitational. Guilford’s rookie Tanner Gross finished nine strokes out of first in a share of eighth place with a two-over-par 70-75-70-215. Dallas Page had the Quakers’ second-best finish (T14) after shooting 76-71-70-217.
Freshman Brad White shot a 73-71-74-218 in his debut for the Quakers and leads the team with a 72.67 stroke average in three rounds. Gross, the reigning ODAC Golfer of the Week, is second on the team with a 73.25 stroke average in eight rounds. Ty Palmer has the third-best stroke average for the Quakers at 74.00 in six rounds of play.
Fourth-year head coach Corey Maggard’s squad is ranked sixth in the Oct. 23 Golfstat.com Division III Head-to-Head Ratings. The Quakers are hosting the O’Briant-Jensen Memorial at the Sedgefield Country Club-Dye Course Oct. 28-29.
