NCHSAA Day on Saturday at UNC-CH

CHAPEL HILL– The North Carolina High School Athletic Association will be recognized by the University of North Carolina on Saturday at Kenan Stadium.

The North Carolina-Boston College football game, which kicks off at 3:30 pm, has been designated as the 29th annual NCHSAA Day. The university actually spearheaded the founding of the NCHSAA in 1913.

Special halftime activities will highlight NCHSAA Day. The winners of the Wells Fargo Cup for the 2012-13 academic year, symbolic of the best overall interscholastic sports program in the state, will be honored. The winners include Lake Norman Charter High School in the 1-A classification; Carrboro among 2-A schools; Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons in the 3-A classification; and Green Hope High School of Cary in the 4-A class.

In addition, the newest members of the NCHSAA Hall of Fame will be recognized. They include:

  • Bobby Guthrie of Raleigh, an outstanding coach and administrator who served as the senior administrator for athletics for Wake County for many years. He is nationally recognized for his involvement in coaches’ education.
  • Jack Huss of Rutherfordton, who coached football and golf at several schools, including R-S Central. He really made his mark as a game official with a stellar 40-year career, including working a number of NCHSAA basketball championship games.
  • Lindsey Linker of Chapel Hill, one of the state’s all-time best tennis coaches, whose men’s and women’s teams at both Chapel Hill and East Chapel Hill High Schools have combined to earn an amazing 16 NCHSAA dual team state championships.
  • Shelly Marsh of Smithfield, who was a great head coach in men’s basketball as well as an outstanding school administrator. His teams won 533 games, including stints at D.H. Conley, Havelock and West Johnston
  • Dave Odom of Winston-Salem, an outstanding basketball coach at both the high school and collegiate levels, including some outstanding NCAA tournament teams at Wake Forest
  • Cindi Simmons of Webster, one of the state’s top coaches in both volleyball and women’s basketball who has won NCHSAA state championships in both sports at Smoky Mountain to go with a career basketball record of 512-279
  • Sam Story of Burlington, who spent 29 years as a head football coach at Southern Alamance and Burlington Williams, winning a pair of NCHSAA state football titles at Williams
  • Ron Vincent of Greenville , one of the state’s top baseball coaches whose teams at Greenville Rose have won six NCHSAA state championships and he has compiled an amazing 800 career victories

This is the 28th group of inductees to join the prestigious hall, bringing to 156 the number of individuals enshrined.
These eight will formally be inducted into the NCHSAA Hall of Fame next spring during the Hall’s annual banquet and induction ceremonies at the Friday Center in Chapel Hill.
