RALEIGH— Wake County representatives had a great day on Friday in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A women’s tennis tournament at the Millbrook Exchange Park.
Seven of the eight qualifiers to Saturday’s semifinals, from six different schools, are from Wake County, including all four doubles teams. Chelsea Sawyer of West Forsyth is the only non-Wake County participant left in the tournament.
Defending singles champ Maggie Kane of Raleigh Broughton moved closer to her second consecutive championship with a pair of straight set victories and will face Bailey Springs of Holly Springs in the semifinals.
In doubles, defending champions Sammi Smith and Jordan Strickland of Cary Panther Creek had a pair of easy wins, taking two of their four sets at love. The Panther Creek pair will face Raleigh Broughton’s Adrienne Overcash and Alison Austin in the semifinals. The Cary team of Jamie Rogers and Hannah Jabusch did not drop a single game en route to their two straight-set victories.
Finals are scheduled for ten o’clock Saturday morning at the Millbrook Exchange Park.
