Greensboro College Pride Volleyball Falls to Averett 3-0

DANVILLE, VA — The Greensboro College Pride volleyball team returned to action on Tuesday night, with an 3-0 defeat at the hands of the Cougars of Averett University.

In the first game of the match, The Pride ran out to an early 6-2 lead that forced the Cougars coach to use his first time out of the game. Coming out of the timeout, Averett ran off three straight points for make the score 6-5 and eventually taking the lead back in the game at7-8. Following a service error by the Cougars, Greensboro regained a two point lead at 11-9. From that point on, both teams would trade points back and forth. Neither team got an edge in the game, before Averett closed out the first game at 25-23.

In the second game, Averett jumped out to an early 4-0 lead before The Pride made a three point run to make the score 4-3. The Cougars took control in the game once again running the score to 11-6 before Greensboro would use their first timeout of the game. After the timeout break, Averett did not let up on The Pride going on to win the second game by a score of 25-15.

In the third game, Averett jumped out to a 9-3 lead forcing Greensboro to take an early timeout in the game. Following the break, the Cougars contiued the momentum that they had going pushing the lead to 15-5. Following the run by Averett, Greensboro would fight back to make the game closer at 19-14. Despite the runs by The Pride, the Cougars held on to win the third game and close out the match at 25-21.

The Pride was led by Liz Widenhouse with eight kills in the contest, while Dallas Hasty contributed six kills. Cortland Phillips passed for a team high 21 assits.

With the loss Greensboro falls to 12-17 overall, and 8-9 in USA South play. The Pride will return to action tomorrow night, when they travel across town to face off against the Quakers of Guilford College. Game time is set for a 7:00 pm start.
