Elon Women’s Basketball Hosts Pfeiffer in Exhibition Today

ELON, N.C. – The Elon women’s basketball team will play its lone exhibition game prior to the start of the 2013-14 season on Saturday, Nov. 2, at 1:30 p.m. against Pfeiffer College in Alumni Gym. Admission will be $5 for adults and $3 for youth 12 and under.

After a 19-14 overall record, a 14-6 program-best Southern Conference record and its second post-season appearance in three years last season, the Phoenix is ready to get back on the court and improve on last year’s success. Head coach Charlotte Smith, now in her third season, returns nine players from last year’s team, including three starters – Sam Coffer, Kelsey Harris and Zora Stephenson.

Harris was recently named to the Southern Conference Preseason All-Conference team by the league’s coaches, while Elon was picked to finish fifth by both the coaches and the media. The Phoenix was selected fifth last season before besting that prediction with a third place finish in the conference.

Other key returners for the maroon and gold include Shannen Cochraham, Autumn Carter and Jessica Farmer. All three players saw significant playing time last season as underclassman and look to make a strong impact on the court this season.

Elon also welcomes four freshmen this season – Lauren Brown, Mackenzie Darrah, Jenifer Rhodes and Lenaira Ruffin.

The Lady Falcons of Pfeiffer are coming off its first 20-win season in over five years and its third best season in school history. Pfeiffer is led by first-season head coach Roy Dow and was picked to finish seventh in the Conference Carolinas Preseason. The Lady Falcons advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament least season but only returns five players from that team. The 2013-14 Pfeiffer roster boasts 10 freshmen, including Hollie Boggs who is from nearby Burlington, N.C. and attended Southern Alamance.

The 2013-14 Elon women’s basketball viewbook is now available online. This book brings an interactive experience to the fans and incorporates full-color graphics, as well as video content. Check it out in the top menu of the women’s basketball page on elonphoenix.com.

The Phoenix begins its regular season on Friday, Nov. 8, against Winston-Salem State in a 5 p.m. tip in Alumni Gym.
