A look at local Division I Women’s Basketball Players

STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA COLLGIATE LOCAL BASKETBALL PLAYERS

Elon:

Autumn Carter: Rockingham: saw minutes during her freshmen year and average 2.6 ppg and 1.8 rpg. Should contribute more this year.

Samantha Coffer: Northern Guilford: started 29 games and average 5.5 ppg and 4.9 rpg. Led team in blocks with 24: a carreer 5.5 scorer that shoots around 36% from the field: Should be counted on more with the departure of Kelsey Evans and Allie Ford. Made the academic team this past season. Should provide more offense this year as Elon chalenge for the Conference Championship under Charlotte Smith leadership. Kelsey Harris will be the leader and look for Cofer to provide solid play.

Lenair Ruffin: Rivermills Academy: Could provide added depth at the guard position and should see a lot of playing time.

Campbell

Jessica Pone; Southwest Guilford: saw limited action but should see more this year: avg 1.3 ppg and 1.2 rpg while shooting 40% from the filed and 50% from the charity stripe. Made the honor roll back in the spring.

Amanda Coffer: Northern Guilford: should see action and could provide Campbell with a tall player that is capable of hitting the three when left open. They could use her shot blocking ability.

North Carolina A&T:

Kenya Hailey: Southeast Guilford: should see playing time this year for the Aggies in spot minutes and a team that could surprise again.

Cristina Carter: Thomasville: The transfer from VCU could be one of the MEAC’s best at the guard position. She played major minutes at VCU and contributed. She will bring experience and excitement for the Aggie fans. She has the ability to take over a game. Should be one of the conferences top assist leader because she has players that can finish. She can also score and control the pace of a game. average nearly 6 ppg at VCU.

Mia Rudd:East: Forsyth: Could see spot duty this year.

UNCG:

Breonna Patterson: Dudley: enters her last year. Teams second leading scorer at nearly 10 ppg. Provides solid defense. Team has never had a winning season during her tenure. This year could be different spearheaded by Freshmen of the Year Lucy Mason. She has been a steady performer for the Spartans and should take on a more leadership role this coming season. If she provides the leadership this could be a good season at maybe 15 wins. If not this could be a season that could have been. Going out on a good note is not a bad idea.

High Point University

Lindsay Puckett: Rockingham: saw lots of action and average 8.5 ppg and 4.1 rpg. Third on team in steals with 52. Could play major road in teams success this year. A really good solid player that can hit the outside shot and her numbers could rise again this year in the 12 point range as she looks to get to the basket. With the departure of Chyenne Parker, her improvement as well as many others will be much needed. This could be an interesting year for HPU.

Jatzmin Johnson: New Hope Academy: saw limited action last year but could add a presence in the post this season.

UNC

Megan Buckland: Bishop Mcguiness: saw playing time and seems to be back from knee surgery. Provided scoring off the bench at nearly 6 ppg. Should provide experience for the Mcdonalds All American players that Carolina recruited. Was redshirted during her injury year as a freshmen. Has a nice shot from the perimeter that keeps defenses honest. Carolina is expecting big things this year after nearly losing to Albany of the American East Conference in the NCAA Tournament 59-54.

Gardner Webb

Catina Green: Western Guilford: Has been a proven player since her freshmen year when she made the All Big South Freshmen Team after averaging 5 ppg. Second on the team with 10.2 ppg and 9.4 rpg last year. A recipient of the Big South Presidential Honor roll. Was not as heralded as many other post players in the area during highschool but has out performed the ones that came out in her class except Chyeene Parker (SWG & HPU-MTSU). One of the best post players in the conference.

North Carolina Asheville

Brittany Gwynn: HP Central: a solid player whom has had to battle injuries: averaged 8.5 ppg and 3 rpg during her freshmen year 2011-12 season. If healthy she could help provide a solid spark for Ashville. Plays hard and does everything to put her team in a position to win.

Winthrop

Ronata Rogers: Greensboro Day: enters her freshmen year and could see playing time as the season progress. Could provide solid rebounding and scoring from around the basket.

OUT OF TOWN LOCAL BASKETBALL PLAYERS

Stony Brook University: Long Island, New York

Miranda Jenkins: Eastern Guilford: returns as the teams highest field goal and three point percentage shooter at 48% and 50% respectively during spot minutes as she recovers from injury. Led the team in assist to turn over ration 2-1. According to the NCAA report, Stony Brook had the seventh highest turn around 10 additional wins from previous season in womens basketball in the Nation. American East Conference has one of the highest academics standards and SBU Academics is one of the highest in the world according to News World report and Kiplinger. She was a member of the Deans List. A healthy year could help provide an additional spark for SBU. SBU will open its new 21 million dollar arena in the Fall 2014 (see http://www.stonybrookarena.com/)

Florida Gulf Coast: Jacksonville, Florida

Whitney Knight:Winston Salem Reynolds) had a super freshmen year averaging nearly 8.0 ppg and led the team in block shots. Help lead the team to one of the best records in collegiate basketball as FGCU reached the NCAA Tournament. Unfortunately she had to have knee surgery during her second year and was redshirted. Because of her skill set and height she was one of the most highly recruited players in the area. She spurned Duke in order to attend FGCU. Appears to be ready for this coming season and look for her presence to be one of the keys to keep FGCU as one of womens premiere basketball programs. Named to the Atlantic Sun All Tournament Team and the Teams Newcomer of the year.

USC UPSTATE: Spartanburg, South Carolina

Brittany Clency: Western Guilford: started in 18 games out of 29. avarage 4.4 ppg (35% fg) and 63% from the charity stripe: should be a starter this year based on last year. Has the ability to have big games and her experience from the previous year should bold well. Will be counted on heavily as Upstate continues to build from last season. One of three starters that are returning.
