WASHINGTON, D.C. – Sophomore E.J. Montgomery passed for four touchdowns and ran for one in Catholic University of America’s 38-29 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) football win over Guilford College Saturday.
The Cardinals raced to a 26-7 third-quarter advantage, but Guilford rallied with three straight touchdowns and took its first lead on Matt Pawlowski’s 13-yard touchdown pass to Nick Mearite early in the fourth quarter.
Montgomery and the Cardinals answered with a 13-play, 61-yard scoring drive capped by the sophomore’s three-yard touchdown pass to senior Mike Pitsenberger to put Catholic back ahead, 32-29. Guilford blocked its third point-after attempt (and fourth placement kick) of the game to stay within a field goal.
The Quakers couldn’t answer on the ensuing possession and their fake punt attempt fell two-yards short of a first down with 5:05 left. Catholic’s offense returned for a six-play, 32-yard drive capped by Montgomery’s four-yard scoring run that provided the final margin.
Catholic sacked Pawlowski three times on Guilford’s final possession to secure the win.
The Cardinals grabbed a19-7 halftime lead thanks to Montgomery’s running and passing. He gained 77 of his game-high 129 rushing yards in the first half and led Catholic on three long scoring drives. Montgomery also completed 21-of-31 passes for 180 yards. Andrew Ouellette caught 12 passes for 117 yards, including a hard-fought 37-yard touchdown that opened a 26-7 third-quarter lead. Pitsenberger carried 25 times for 125 yards and Nick Cortese added 60 rushing yards and a touchdown. The Cardinals totaled 314 of their 508 total offensive yards on the ground.
Guilford’s Pawlowski completed 13-of-24 passes for 207 yards and two touchdowns. He also scored the Quakers’ first touchdown of the game, which was set up by Philip Collier’s recovery of a muffed punt on the Catholic 26-yard line. Sophomore Josh Schow carried 19 times for 94 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for the two-point conversion that gave Guilford a 29-26 lead with 11:19 to play.
Daytwyn Rascoe made a career-high 18 tackles to lead the Quakers’ defense. Satiir Stevenson and Ricky Douglas both added 16 stops, also personal bests. Guilford’s Ke’Desh Edwards blocked a school-record three kicks, two point-after attempts and a 25-yard field-goal attempt in the third quarter.
Guilford closes out the 2013 season next Saturday at home versus Emory & Henry College at 1:00 p.m.
