Elon Men’s Basketball Hits the Road to Face Marist

ELON, N.C. – Coming off a win in its season opener on Friday night, the Elon University men’s basketball team hits the road for the first time of the season for a Sunday night matchup with Marist in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Tip is scheduled for 5 p.m.

ELON VS. MARIST: Sunday marks the first ever meeting between Elon and Marist. The Phoenix and Red Foxes have one possible common opponent this season in Canisius, as Elon and Canisius could potentially meet in the NIT Season Tip-Off.

LOOKING BACK: The Phoenix shot a blistering 72 percent from the field in a 114-64 win over Washington & Lee in its season opener on Friday night, Nov. 8, in a sold out Alumni Gym. Sebastian Koch led all players with 22 points, six boards and six assists. Elon shot 57 percent from three-point range as well, going 12-of-21. The win marked the largest margin of victory during Matt Matheny’s tenure as head coach. It is also the most points in a season opener since the 1982-83 season. The sellout crowd is the fifth straight in Alumni Gym dating back to last season.

LOOKING AHEAD: Following Sunday’s contest at Marist, Elon travels to Charlotte, N.C., on Friday, Nov. 15, to face the Charlotte 49ers. Tip is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Halton Arena.

HEAD COACH MATT MATHENY: Matt Matheny is in his fifth season as the Elon head men’s basketball coach. The 2013 Southern Conference Coach of the Year by the media, Matheny enters Sunday’s game with an overall record of 60-68. Matheny was a finalist for CollegeInsider.com’s Hugh Durham Award last season, which honors the nation’s top mid-major coach.

HITTING THE CENTURY MARK: Elon’s 114 points against Washington & Lee on Nov. 8 marked the 58th time the team has scored 100 or more points in a game in school history.

ON THIS DATE: The last time Elon played on Nov. 10 was last season in Indianapolis against Brad Stevens’ Butler squad in the EA SPORTS Maui Invitational. The Phoenix dropped a 74-59 decision to the Bulldogs at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
