Greensboro College Men’s Soccer Advances to USA South Championship Game With 2-1 Victory

MARTINSVILLE, VA – The #2 seed Greensboro college men’s soccer team defeated #3 seed Maryville college 2-0 in the USA South semifinals on Friday night. The Pride used two first half goals lifting them to their victory.

Greensboro found the back of the net just two minutes into the game when Shaun Watt played a through ball to Drew Clukey who beat the keeper for the early 1-0 lead. Maryville responded by finding the score sheet at the 23:28 mark tying the score at 1-1.

The Pride regained the lead at the 36:15 mark when George Dimopoulos converted on a penalty kick making it 2-1. The score remained the same going into the break.

In the second half both teams had three opportunities each but were unable to find the back of the net. The Greensboro defense held tight down the stretch leading to the 2-1 victory.

Watt led the way with three shots, two of those coming on goal. Dimopoulos also had two shots, with one on goal. Manbi Nyepon picked up the win in goal making it two saves.

Following the game, coach Trice said ” This was a very hard fought contest. Maryville I s a very coached team and caused us some problems in the midfield during the first half. We made corrections at halftime and our team defending won us the game.”

With the victory the#2 seed Pride advance to the USA South championship against #1 seed Methodist on Saturday. The kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. at Smith River Complex in Martinsville, Virginia.
