College Men’s Basketbal Final – Coastal Carolina 76, Guilford 49 (exhibition for Guilford)

CONWAY, S.C. – Elijah Wilson scored a game-high 16 points in Coastal Carolina University’s 76-49 men’s basketball win over visiting Guilford College Monday night.

The victory marked the season’s first for the NCAA Division I Chanticleers (1-1), but is considered an exhibition for the Division III Quakers and does not count against their overall won-loss record.

With Coastal leading 12-10 midway through the first half, Wilson completed a traditional three-point play that triggered a 15-2 Chanticleers’ run. Wilson scored seven points during the six-minute spurt. Guilford’s Trever Hyatt made two free throws and Matt McCarthy followed with a three-pointer to get the Quakers back to within 10, but Wilson knocked down another three and the Chants carried a 38-22 edge into halftime.

Guilford’s McCarthy opened the second-half scoring with a basket, but the 14-point deficit was as close as the Quakers got in the second half.
Michel Enanga scored 14 points for Coastal Carolina and teammate El Hadji Ndieguene added 10 points and a team-high eight boards off the bench. Colton Ray-St. Cyr contributed eight points, six boards and four assists.

McCarthy paced the Quakers with eight points. Senior Jake Hopkins and junior Cole Greene both added seven. Guilford’s Zach Houston did not score, but the freshman did collect a game-high nine rebounds, four on the offensive glass. The Quakers were narrowly outrebounded, 50-45, and limited the Chanticleers to 38.4% field-goal shooting.

Guilford opens the season in earnest Friday night (11/15) versus LaGrange College in the opening round of the Guilford Invitational at 7:00 p.m.
