Women’s Basketball: Guilford 59, Alma 53

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Brittany Drew and Morgan King led Guilford to a 59-53 win over Alma Sunday afternoon at the Ragan Brown Field House. The win gave the Quakers a sweep of their two games in the Marriott Invitational.

Drew scored 13 of her game-high 18 points in the first half as Guilford (2-0) raced out to a 27-18 halftime lead. She hit five of her eight shots in the opening 20 minutes, including three from behind the three-point arc.

King heated up after intermission, as she tallied 11 of her 15 points in the second half. She went 4-6 from the floor and a perfect 3-3 from the line in the second half.

Two free throws by King gave the Quakers a 36-24 lead with 16:32 remaining in the second half and it looked like Guilford was in complete control. But Alma (0-2) went on a 14-5 run to cut the deficit to just three points.

Drew hit a jumper to end the run and then after the visitors hit a free throw, King hit a layup to put the lead back to six points

A three by Drew with 3:19 remaining pushed the Quakers lead to 10 points, but once again the Scots charged back. A 7-1 run cut the lead to 57-53 and a Guilford turnover gave Alma the ball with 22 seconds remaining.

But the Scots missed a jumper, King got the rebound and Kayla Adams iced the win with two free throws.

Erica Hansen led the Scots with 13 points and earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team. Drew and King also made the squad, which was rounded out by Roanoke College’s Tatum McKee and Paxton Gwin who claimed MVP honors.

In the first game, Roanoke downed York, 80-43, as Gwin scored 23 points.

The Quakers return to action Wednesday when they travel to Raleigh to take on Meredith at 7:00 pm.
