HPU Volleyball Signs Two Recruits For 2014

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University volleyball team has inked two recruits to National Letters of Intent, head coach Jason Oliver announced on Tuesday. Outside hitter Haley Barnes and middle blocker Camryn Freiberg will join the Panthers in 2014.

“With Haley and Camryn joining our family here at HPU it marks an exciting era of High Point volleyball,” Oliver said. “Both have played at the highest levels of club and high school volleyball and it shows in their drive and dedication to being the best student-athletes they can be. They possess the character that it takes to win a Big South Conference title.”

Barnes is an outside hitter from Neenah, Wis. She led Neenah High School to three-straight Conference Championships and a perfect 27-0 conference record for the last two seasons. Barnes is Neenah’s all-time kills leader with 1,331 kills, including 415 kills her senior year.

Barnes was a unanimous first team All-Conference selection for the last three seasons and earned first team All-State honors as a junior and senior. As a senior she was named the Area Player of the Year.

For the last three years Barnes has played for the Milwaukee Sting club team. The team finished first at the 2013 JVA World Challenge and where Barnes was the World Challenge Player of the Games. Barnes was also named to the 2012 NJC All-Tournament Team and finished second at 2012 AAU Nationals with the Sting.

“Haley is a natural leader and a force on the floor,” Oliver said. “I have seen Haley lead her teams to victory through emotional encouragement and also by taking that team on her back and dominating on the floor. Haley has the talent, leadership and character to take this team to new heights.”

Freiberg joins High Point from Allen, Texas. The middle blocker is a three-time All-District player for Allen High School, earning first-team honors as a junior and senior. She was also voted the District 10 Blocker of the Year in 2012.

As a senior, Freiberg tallied 528 kills (3.69 per set), 212 digs and 138 blocks to help the Allen High School to the Sweet 16 of the state championships, the best finish in school history.

This year Freiberg will play with the TAV 18 Black club team. She played for Skyline the last three seasons and helped the team to a second place finish at the 2012 Junior Olympic Nationals.

“All you can say about Camryn is wow,” Oliver said. “She is probably one of the most explosive players to ever come to High Point and I am excited to see where this team can go with her. Camryn has special ability, special character and a special faith that allows her to be a very focused and determined student-athlete. It is that focus of heart and mind along with her exceptional athletic gifts that will provide our program with an instant spark.”

The Panthers finished third in the Big South in 2013 with a 16-15 overall record and a 9-5 mark in league play. High Point returns 12 players from the 2013 squad, including All-Big South honorees Chelsea Davis and Kristin Heldt. Big South Freshman of the Year Savannah Angel will also be back for High Point in 2014.
