Hood coming to Greensboro, Northern Guilford going to Boiling Springs Crest and Washington coming to High Point:HS Football SMR

Time once again for the High School Football Saturday Morning rewind……

Some real good games last night and boy, did Northern Guilford and High Point Andrews get a scare and a couple of big-time wakeup calls….NG 22-19 over Matthews Weddington and now they will travel to take on the Boiling Springs Crest Chargers next Friday night for the NCHSAA 3-AA West Title and a chance to earn a trip to BB&T Field in Winston-Salem, where the Nighthawks would be going for their fourth straight 3-AA crown….All that is standing between the ‘Hawks and that fourth title is Crest and Northern has beaten Crest twice during their ‘March to the Championships’ and you know Chargers’ coach Mark Barnes has not forgotten to remind his team about that…Got the makings for an all-out war next Friday night in Boiling Springs…Coltrane threw a few picks last night, but he was big when it mattered most, along with Ripberger, Freeman, Reynolds, Scott and Andre Adams…Adams came up big late, after being burned earlier in the contest…That was the word on Adams late last night from the N&R on-line…

The word from the Charlotte Observer on the Crest Chargers from last night….www.charlotteobserver.com
Crest 30, Asheville Reynolds 13: Crest ended Asheville Reynolds’ Cinderella ride through the N.C. 3A playoffs. Reynolds was a No. 13 seed. P.J. Brooks had the put-away 12-yard touchdown run for the Chargers with 3:28 to play. Crest will host next week’s regional championship against three-time state champion Northern Guilford. Northern Guilford beat Crest 21-20 in 2010 to win the first of those three straight titles after Crest’s kicker missed a point-after attempt that would have tied the game with 15.7 seconds left. Northern Guilford also beat Crest 31-7 in the 2011 N.C. 3AA state final.

High Point Andrews was tied up with Northside for what seemed like an eternity last evening…Every time I looked up at the text that Don Moore was sending me, the score was deadlocked at 7-7, or at 14-14 and then the Red Raiders stepped up and pulled it out, 21-14 over the team from Jacksonville….Now HPA will play the team from Washington next and Washingto walloped Currituck 44-6 in Round Two and this Washington team looks like they could be for real….They all are for real when you get this deep in the playoffs…Time to focus and you have to remember, now it is not about your last play, now you are only as good as your ‘next play’……We will get some more in here on the Red Raiders performance last night, but as for now, they have to get focused on Washington coming to High Point next Friday night….Next Friday, next play, next man/team up……We will hit the High Point Enterprise for some details as our time allows….Marquell Cartwright finished with 236 yards rushing and and all three of the of the HP Andrews TD’s….

Just about time now to get back on to the scene of the crime, back to the home front…Next man/next team up for the Dudley Panthers and it will be Elijah Hood and the Charlotte Catholic Cougars coming to Dudley’s Tarpley Stadium, next Friday night…..Next Friday, next play, next game, next team/next man up, Charlotte Catholic and Elijah Hood….Hood is good, Hood is ‘BAD’, Hood has the numbers, Hood is ready, but Dudley is ready too….

Last night when I heard that Hood and Catholic were coming to Greensboro to face the Dudley Panthers, I yelled it out of the window of the press box at Dudley….

“Elijah Hood is coming to Greensboro”

And it is time to get ready….And I do think the Dudley Defense is ready….

from the Charlotte Observer, here is what Hood did last night versus Southeast Guilford….www.charlotteobserver.com:

Elijah Hood, Charlotte Catholic: Rushed for 372 yards and six touchdowns in a 56-30 win over Southeast Guilford in the N.C. 4A semifinals. Hood broke his own school record of 360 yards he set last year. The rushing performance was second most in Mecklenburg County history behind Providence Day’s Josh Covington. Hood also set a single-season county rushing record Friday with 3,541 yards, bettering his total of 3,309 set last year. No other county player has rushed for more than 2,603. The six rushing touchdowns tie a county mark. Hood has 51 rushing touchdowns this season.

Like I was saying, I do think that the Dudley Defense is ready….

Last night, during the process of trying to pick out a ‘Steak n Shake’ player of the game, my mind went toward the Dudley Defense and with a thought toward ‘Big’ Albert McClean in the middle and I thought no, you have go McLean and Chris Register, but you can’t leave out Vance, Cromartie, Diabe and Majek…Then what about Harris, Martin, Williams, Moseley and Meadows and there are more to go along with those young men, there among the Panthers’ defensive battle lines….

And those battle lines have been drawn….Hood is coming to town and Catholic has more than just Hood…Elijah has put up some gawdy numbers, but he has to have somebody out there blocking for him….

To me, turnovers hurt the Rocky River Ravens in their loss to the Dudley Panthers last night…High snaps on the punts, low snaps on the punts by the Ravens and the Dudley defense created turnovers too…There were at least two picks by the Dudley DB’s with Darius Williams, Mychal Martin and company doing a super job of covering up, back in the secondary….

Dudley’s ‘D’ can cause you to make mistakes, but you can’t be just giving the ball over to the opposing team deep in your own territory time after time, with miscues stabbing you in the back….

If Catholic turns that ball over to Dudley on Catholic’s side of the 50, then Dudley will make them pay…Dudley’s Defense is not coming into Round Four playing soft, they will ‘stick you’ and then when the ‘make you pay’, the Dudley offense will ‘cash in’….

Lamarc Watlington had a big running game for Dudley last night….Antoine McCray stepped in for Darius Graves and gave the Panthers a boost, Camden Williamson was in there at RB giving the Panthers power runs and you can never, I do mean “never” discount the running ability of Dudley Panther quarterback Emmanuel Moseley….

Not as much passing from Dudley last night as we saw from the Panthers in the North Davidson game, but the runs were working and with hard work from Watlington, McCrae, Williamson and Moseley, the Panthers had a plan, the plan was/is working and the Panthers are sticking with it….Didn’t see as much from Connell Young, as we have in previous weeks, but he may be keeping some of his ‘stuff’ on the shelf and will be ready to un-load it on Catholic this coming Friday night….

Hope a lot of you will be coming over to Dudley for the Catholic game and I’m sure many of you will be…..

Excellent seasons came to end for Northwest Guilford(12-2) and Southeast Guilford(11-3) last night, but I feel certain that the Vikings and the Falcons will be building upon what they laid down this season, as they approach the future within their two Guilford County outstanding football programs…Coach Woodruff and Coach Hessenthaler but put the foundations in place and it can only be upward and beyond for them…Will have to see which backs will step up for NWG, as Harding and Dix depart….SEG will have to fill the shoes of Shakir Turner, but ‘fleet of foot’ C.J. McThay will be back for his junior season in 2014 and Bubba Craven might have the Falcon fans ravin’ again during his senior campaign….

More on the rewind to follow somewhere, so stay tuned and be on the lookout for Don Moore and Dennis White, they do it right, at GreensboroSports.com…Go get ’em men and bring back the spoils….
