NCCSIA Announces 2013 North Carolina College Division All-State Men’s Soccer Team

The North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) announced its selections for the 2013 College Division All-State Men’s Soccer Teams on Monday. Twenty-two players representing eight different North Carolina Colleges and Universities were selected to the first and second teams.

Queens University of Charlotte leads the way with four selections on the first team, while Wingate University has three players named to the first team. Barton College logged two selections and both Lenior-Rhyne University and Lees-McRae College had one player grace the first team.

Queens’s Montrell Morgan is the 2013 All-State goalkeeper after recording a 16-3-0 record between the posts. The junior was also named this season to the All-South Atlantic Conference second team after appearing in 19 games and assisting the top-seeded Royals in claiming the SAC Tournament Title. The Charlotte native found himself among the nation’s elite players as he ranked 17th nationally in goals against average (.780) and save percentage (.817), while also leading the SAC in shutouts (19). He logged more than 1720 minutes in goal, picked up 67 saves and allowed a mere 15 goals all season.

Defender Jonathan Onyeaka from Queens was named to the first team after assisting the Royals in clinching the SAC Tournament Title and reaching the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2007. The Solihull, England native played and started in 19 games this season. The SAC Freshman of the Year garnered the honor after posting four goals for eight points this season – three of those goals were game-winning efforts against USC Aiken, Tusculum and Coker. The All-SAC second team honoree and Daktronics All-Southeast Region selection helped the Royals to a SAC-low 16 goals during the regular season and assisted the team a SAC best .93 goals against average. He anchored a back line that held opponents to 0.95 goals per game.

In the back, Victor Tozelli is one of the two defenders from Wingate and among the All-State honorees for the second time in his career. The Sao Paulo, Brazil native earned a spot on the Daktronics All-Region team and All-SAC team for the second-consecutive year, while also playing a key role in the stingy Wingate defense. The junior played in 16 games and registered three assists, including a pair in the 4-1 victory over Catawba and another in the 3-0 shutout win against the Indians. He assisted in holding opponents to 1.06 goals and 9.6 shots per contest, as well as seven shutouts during the regular season.

Wingate’s Gui Andrade grabbed the final spot on the first team as a defender after concluding the season with three goals and one assist for seven points. The senior and now three-time All-State, All-SAC and Daktronics All-Region selection helped lead a Bulldog defense that finished the regular season ranked second in the SAC with a 1.03 goals against average. Wingate was the only team in the league to hold SAC opponents under a goal per game during conference matches.

Midfielder Erik Pajunk of Barton was named to the first team following a season where he was named to the Daktronics All-Region second team and an All-Conference Carolinas first team honoree. This season, the Rio de Janerio, Brazil native led the conference and ranked No. 3 nationally in assists with 13, while also ranking third in the league in points with 27 and 11th in goals with seven. The junior scored five goals in a span of five late-season games to help Barton become the third-seeded conference tournament and advance to the semifinals for the second straight year.

Thiago Andrade makes his debut on the All-State team for Queens after earning All-SAC honors for the third time in his career. After playing and starting in all 20 games this season for the Royals, the Salvador, Brazil native sat tied for second in the SAC with 15 goals, as well as tied for first in the league in assists (10) for a total of 20 points (second overall in the SAC). The senior recorded a hat trick in the SAC Tournament Semis to work his way to the SAC Tournament MVP laurel. He ended the season ranked 10th in the nation in points, 12th in assists and 13th in goals, while also pulling in a Daktronics All-Southeast Region laurel.

Lenior-Rhyne’s lone representative on the team, Ben Jones, was a 2013 All-SAC second team honoree after his performance this season with a team-best 10 goals and 21 points. The Dagenham, England native recorded just one assists in his 18 games played and started. During his junior season, he tallied drilled in two game-winning goals over North Georgia and Mount Olive. He was a member of the team that garnered the SAC’s Fair Play Award.

Shaun Gadsby of Wingate is the final midfielder selection for 2013. Gadsby earned not only all-SAC honors, but Daktronics All-Region laurels this season after registering six goals and a team-best five assists for 17 points during the regular season for the Bulldogs, ranking sixth in the SAC in assists, ninth in points and 11th in goals.

Junior Dante De Luca of Barton adds to his collection of laurels that includes being named a two-time All-State selection, two-time Daktronics All-Region and All-Conference Carolinas first team honoree. The Rio de Janiero, Brazil native led the league in points with 34 and finished second in goals with 13, while he also accumulated eight assists – second in the conference and 16th nationally – during his 16 games played and started. The junior was ranked 11th national in points per game (2.13) and 23rd nationally in goals per game (.81). He averaged .50 assists per game and posted four game-winning goals in his last six starts.

Erick Suarez is the fourth member of the first team from Queens. Suarez ranked 32nd in the NCAA in points with 32, and 25th in assists with eighth. The Mexico City, Mexico native finished the season 12 goals and ranked fifth in the SAC in goals, third in assists and fourth in points. The sophomore notched hat trick in the Royals’ 5-0 win over Brevard. He also earned Daktronics All-Southeast Region laurels and All-SAC second team honors this season.

Lees-McRae’s Jordan Wright clinched the only spot for the Bobcats on the All-State first team. The West Lothian, Scotland native finished the season with a team-best 25 points on 10 goals and five assists. The 2013 Conference Carolinas Freshman of the Year and All-Conference second-team selection tallied a team-high three match-winners and had three two-goal performances, including both scores in the 2-0 shutout win at King. He assisted the team in making a triumphant return to the top half of the league table this season, posting a 5-3 record against conference opponents to earn the fourth seed in the conference tournament.

The NCCSIA All-State second team is comprised of UNC Pembroke’s Ryan Hanson, Payne Clark, James Casserly, Rico Laitinen and Sam Miles, Catawba’s Kenney Bonilla and Declan Stimson, Lees-McRae’s Marvyn Rieger, Queen’s Yannick Fischbah, Mars Hill’s Felipe Ferraro and Wingate’s Peron Da Silva.

Nominees were submitted by North Carolina sports information professionals and voted on by the NCCSIA members.

Founded in 2002, The North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) is comprised of sports information professionals from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA and independent institutions from the state of North Carolina. The purpose of the organization is to promote collegiate athletics at all schools. Membership is open to anyone affiliated with a college, university or conference located in North Carolina, and whose area of responsibility lies within sports information.

NCCSSIA selects all-state teams in the University (Division I) and College (Division II, III, NAIA) divisions for men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, softball and baseball.
