College Men’s Basketball Final – Guilford 78, Shenandoah 77

WINCHESTER, Va. – Jake Hopkins (Kernersville, N.C./East Forsyth) scored a career-high 20 points, including the winning shot with 13 seconds remaining, in Guilford College’s 78-77 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball win at Shenandoah University Saturday. Hopkins’ basket capped the Quakers’ rally from a 12-point second-half deficit and lifted Guilford to its first 7-0 start since 2006.

Hopkins’ score broke a 76-76 tie, the game’s 10th deadlock. Shenandoah (3-3, 0-2 ODAC) had a chance to tie the game with two seconds remaining, when the Hornets’ Avery Green went to the foul line for a one-and-one opportunity. Green made the first shot, but after a Quakers’ timeout, missed the second free-throw and Guilford’s Zeb Richardson grabbed the rebound.

Green led all scorers with 23 points and had 14 first-half points, which helped the Hornets hold a 39-29 halftime lead. Jimi Sparks scored the second-half’s first basket and the Hornets held a 12-point lead, their largest of the game.

The Hornets led by eight on Jared Carithers’ three-pointer with 6:15 remaining, but Guilford went on an 11-2 run and took a 70-69 edge with 3:38 to play. The teams traded baskets the rest of the way before Hopkins’ go-ahead score.

Guilford’s Matt McCarthy scored 15 of his team-high 22 points in the second half and collected eight rebounds. Hopkins netted 12 second-half points and Richardson scored 10 of his 16 points in the final stanza. After shooting just over 38 percent in the first half, the Quakers shot 52.6% in the second half. Richardson had four blocks and a team-high nine boards, which helped the visitors enjoy a 47-29 rebounding edge. Guilford had 16 offensive rebounds and scored 22 of the game’s 27 second-chance points.

After a break for final exams, the Quakers host Methodist University Saturday (12/14) at 3:00 p.m.
