GDS News Alert: Spurr, Macheledt Win Bill Lee Scholarships

Four Greensboro high school students, including GDS seniors Caroline Spurr and Marshall Macheledt, were awarded the Bill Lee Scholarship during the news conference to announce seeding and pairings for the 38th annual TIMCO Invitational presented by NewBridge Bank. The Greensboro Sports Council has awarded these $2,000 scholarships during this annual high school basketball tournament since 2001

Spurr is in the National Honor Society, is an AP scholar, and is a member of the diversity club, the ambassador’s club and the Spanish club. She is a team captain and has received all-state and all-conference honors. In addition to basketball, she also runs track and cross country. She will play basketball at Emory University.

Macheledt carries a 4.2 grade-point average and is in the National Beta Club. He is co-captain of the basketball team and was both all-conference and offensive MVP last season. He plans to attend either Emerson College, Liberty University, Washington & Lee or Baldwin Wallace University.

Bill Lee was a Greensboro native and resident who was a major supporter of local sports. He was deeply involved with Greensboro’s minor league baseball efforts, basketball and golf. The Bill Lee Memorial Scholarship was established by the Greensboro Sports Council following Lee’s death in 2001. Recipients are nominated by the schools participating in the TIMCO Invitational each year.

Four student-athletes receive a scholarship each year. Winners are the most qualified applicants regardless of which participating school they represent or whether they are male or female. All eight participating schools nominated athletes for this honor. Each nomination is considered with the following criteria: 40% academic, 40% athletic and 20% civic.

  1. Congrats to Marshall. You are missed at Caldwell, that’s for sure. Well deserved honor for a fine young man.
