Greensboro Sports Council Awards Annual Bill Lee Scholarships to Four Greensboro Students

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Four Greensboro high school students were awarded the Bill Lee Scholarship during the news conference to announce seeding and pairings for the 38th annual TIMCO Invitational presented by NewBridge Bank, it was announced today. The Greensboro Sports Council has awarded these $2,000 scholarships during this annual high school basketball tournament since 2001.
The winners will receive their formal awards on December 28 during a special ceremony prior to the TIMCO Invitational men’s championship game at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex. All eight participating schools are invited to nominate student athletes for the Bill Lee Scholarships each year.

Bill Lee was a Greensboro native and resident who was a major supporter of local sports. He was deeply involved with Greensboro’s minor league baseball efforts, basketball and golf. The Bill Lee Memorial Scholarship was established by the Greensboro Sports Council following Lee’s death in 2001. Recipients are nominated by the schools participating in the TIMCO Invitational each year, and the Greensboro Sports Council awards the scholarships. Each nomination is considered with the following criteria: 40% academic, 40% athletic and 20% civic.

Four student-athletes receive a scholarship each year. Winners are the most qualified applicants regardless of which participating school they represent or whether they are male or female. With the following 2013 winners who are listed alphabetically below, 52 student athletes have won the Bill Lee Scholarship since the program’s inception.

Robert Bouknight is a senior at Grimsley High School. He is a student ambassador, the vice-president of Athletes in Action and a member of the creativity and service club. He volunteers at First Lutheran Church, Greensboro Urban Ministry and the Man-Up Mentoring program and plans to attend UNC-Chapel Hill, NC State University or the University of Virginia. He is undecided on his career choice.

Anna Moore is a senior at Grimsley High School. She carries a 4.65 grade-point average, is a Junior Marshall and an Academic Star. She won the most outstanding junior award last year. She was named the Most Valuable Player at Grimsley each of the last two years and was named best defensive player in her freshman year, and she is a team captain. She plans to attend UNC-Chapel Hill, UNC-Wilmington or West Virginia University, and she is considering careers in Physical Therapy, Athletic Administration or Occupational Therapy.

Caroline Spurr represents Greensboro Day School. She is in the National Honor Society and is an AP scholar with a 3.76 grade-point average. She is a member of the diversity club, the ambassador’s club and the Spanish club. She is a team captain and has received all state and all- conference honors. In addition to basketball, she also runs track and cross country. She will play basketball at Emory University. She hopes to be an attorney or a psychologist.

Marshall Macheledt is a senior at Greensboro Day School. He carries a 4.2 grade-point average and is in the National Beta Club. He is co-captain of the basketball team and was both all-conference and offensive MVP last season. He plans to attend either Emerson College, Liberty University, Washington & Lee or Baldwin Wallace University and hopes to pursue a career in Broadcast Journalism.

The TIMCO Invitational presented by NewBridge Bank is an annual high school basketball tournament in Greensboro, N.C. Founded in 1976 as the Little 4 Invitational, the tournament features men’s and women’s teams representing eight Guilford County high schools playing at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex. Tournament proceeds are donated to local charities and the participating schools; the TIMCO Invitational is planned and implemented by the Greensboro Sports Council.
