Washington is being honored in the Big Apple as one of 16 recipients of the NFF’s National Scholar-Athlete Awards. As a recipient of one of college football’s most prestigious honors, Washington received an $18,000 scholarship for postgraduate studies and is a finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, which recognizes the nation’s top football scholar-athlete. The 24th recipient of the Campbell Trophy will be announced during Tuesday’s ceremony.

The NFF Awards Dinner will be shown live on ESPN3, beginning at 8 p.m. on Tuesday evening. Additionally, all honorees will take part in a press conference at 9 a.m. Tuesday, which will also be carried live on ESPN3.

Washington, a senior with a 3.80 cumulative grade point average in architectural design, is only the second NFF National Scholar-Athlete in Appalachian State history (joining D.J. Campbell, who earned the honor in 1992). He was named the University’s Most Outstanding Architectural Design Student in 2012-13 and was the winner of the architectural design department’s portfolio competition last semester.

On the field, Washington closed his spectacular career by earning first-team all-Southern Conference accolades after leading the league with 939 receiving yards in 2013. He finished his career ranked eighth in school history with 139 receptions and ninth with 1,837 receiving yards. He is also Appalachian’s all-time leader in kickoff-return yardage (1,289) and average (23.4 yards per return).
