College Golf News – Guilford to Co-Host 2018 NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) announced Guilford College and the Greensboro Sports Commission as co-hosts of the 2018 Division III Men’s Golf Championships at the Grandover Resort and Conference Center Wednesday. The three organizations also co-hosted the 2011 NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championships at Grandover Resort, and will work together on the 2014 and 2015 national tournaments there as well.

The dates of the 2018 tournament are May 15-18.

“It’s an honor to host the national championships for the third time in a five-year span,” said Guilford Athletics Director Tom Palombo. “It says a lot about Grandover’s facility and staff, the Sports Commission and the many volunteers, who provide the teams and fans a first-class experience.”

The 2013 NCAA Men’s Golf Championships featured 41 teams and 210 student-athletes. After 36 holes, the field is trimmed to 15 remaining teams, plus the low-six individuals not playing for one of the remaining teams. The University of Texas-Tyler won last year’s tournament, which was held at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort in Destin, Fla.

Guilford has made 30 national tournament appearances over the past 36 years. The Quakers won the 2002 and 2005 NCAA Division III titles and finished second in 2001 and 2010. Guilford also won the 1989 NAIA National Tournament and hosted the event in 1979.

The city of Greensboro boasts two of Division III’s top men’s golf teams. Guilford and Greensboro College are currently ranked fourth and 13th, respectively, in the Golf World/Nike Golf Coaches’ Poll. The Quakers are fourth in the current Golfstat.com Division III Head-to-Head ratings, while the Pride sits 15th. Greensboro won the 2011 crown at Grandover and Guilford finished 11th.

Grandover Resort sits on the south side of Greensboro among 1,500 acres of oak, pine, and dogwood-covered hills. David Graham and Gary Panks designed two 18-hole golf courses, which were both ranked “4½ Stars” by Golf Digest and are listed among “America’s Best Places to Play.”

The NCAA played its Division I Men’s Golf Greensboro Regional at Grandover in 2012. The city of Greensboro hosted the 1988 Division III Golf Championships with Greensboro College at the Greensboro Country Club Farm Course. The city also hosted NCAA Division I Championships in men’s basketball (1974 Final Four) and women’s soccer (1997, 1998), as well as several NCAA Division III soccer championships.

Today’s announcement by the NCAA also identified Greensboro as site of the Division III Men’s and Women’s Soccer Championships in 2016 and 2017, as well as the 2016 Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships.
