College Football News – Guilford’s Satiir Stevenson Named AFCA All-American

WACO, Texas – Guilford College’s Satiir Stevenson (Roselle, N.J./Abraham Clark) earned NCAA Division III All-America honors from the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Monday. Stevenson joins Chris Barnette ’07 and Bryan Garland ’95 as the lone Quakers so honored and is Guilford’s first AFCA All-American since Barnette in 2006.

The AFCA has selected an All-America team since 1945 and honors students in all five college football divisions (FCS, FBS, Division II, Division III, NAIA). AFCA teams feature just one team (25 students) of All-Americans and are elected exclusively by the coaches themselves.

Stevenson earned First Team All-South honors from D3football.com last week and his second straight First Team All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) award last month. The junior safety led the league with four interceptions and ranks 59th in NCAA Division III with 0.4 thefts per game. He also paced the Quakers with a career-high 81 tackles (47 solo), the league’s eighth-best figure. Stevenson broke up five passes, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble. He had two 10-tackle efforts, including a career-high 16 at Catholic University. His 11 takedowns helped the Quakers to their first win at Bridgewater College since 1998. Stevenson made a career-high two interceptions in Guilford’s victory over Shenandoah University. After three seasons, the team captain ranks seventh in school history with 10 career interceptions and is a three-time All-ODAC honoree.

Stevenson also returned punts for Guilford, averaging 8.2 yards per return, which stood second in the ODAC. He fielded 18 punts and compiled 147 return yards with a long return of 25 yards. His 8.2 yards-per-return average stands 66th among this week’s NCAA Division III leaders and ninth in school history.

Stevenson helped coach Chris Rusiewicz’s Quakers post the program’s first winning record (6-4) since 2007. Guilford finished second in the ODAC with a school-record 5-2 mark. The Quakers could return as many as 18 starters in 2014, including Stevenson.
