Game of the Week, Game of the Month all rolled into one Friday night at Northeast Guilford’s Primm Gym with McCain and Ellis clutch down the stretch

*****This ought to make for a great ‘High School Basketball Saturday Morning rewind’*****

This was one of those Games of the Week, Games of the Month and the Games of the Year, all rolled into one, on Friday night in the John Primm Gym on the Northeast Guilford campus, on Hicone Road just off of Highway 29 North…

The Northern Guilford Nighthawks at the Northeast Guilford Rams….The final in the boys game was:
Northern Guilford 57
Northeast Guilford 55…..This game could have easily gone into overtime, but Jaray McCain drove the lane late for Northern and he hit the game-winner with just seconds left in this contest…The final possession for the Nighthawks came with just 10.6 seconds left on the regulation game clock and I really thought we were headed for overtime, but McCain had other ideas….

McCain drove the lane, lost control of the ball going up, but regained enough control of the ball to put it up and in, the shot that beat Northeast Guilford….Like we said, McCain drove the lane, his shot brought down rain, the Rams were feeling the pain, and the Northern Guilford crowd went insane…..

McCain wasn’t the only man that came up clutch in the late part of this 57-55 finish….NEG’s Anfernee Ellis drilled three free throws to tie the game at 55-all, after Northern had jumped out in front 55-52….

Ellis hit his first toss and then Northern coach Bill Chambers called a timeout to ice Ellis, but #21 was not done, he was ready to have some more fun and coming out of the the timeout, he nailed the last of his three shots at the charity stripe….

Ellis was just as much clutch as McCain was, it just so happened that McCain got the chance to be the last hero standing on this Friday night….

What a game…..I mean really, “What a game”!!!!!!

McCain and NG get the win, but you have to give Ellis and the Rams something….

This was the ‘Game of the Week’, the ‘Game of the Month’ and the maybe even the ‘Friday Night Game of the Year’, all rolled into one….

Lacrosse coach Mark Goldsmith at Northwest Guilford always asks about ‘The Game of Week’…He remembers our days back over at Dudley, when the ‘The Game of the Week’ would show up nearly every Friday night and Coach Goldsmith would out there running the court as the ref….

Brett Speight, former assisitant coach to Robert Kent at Page, helped name the ‘Game of the Week’, back in the mid/late 90’s…..

Tonight was one for the books again….Again, Northern and Northeast put on quite a show up at NEG and the man the gym is named for, John Primm, was in attendance…..

Some kind of game and there must have been 20-30 lead changes in this one….

NG was up 15-13 at the end of the first quarter….NEG grabbed a 32-26 halftime lead and NG was up again by two at the end of three….

This was some kind of game and the crazy thing is that these teams will meet again, next Thursday in Round One of the TIMCO Invitational Tournament, at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center…..

Big games again, really they were ‘Clutch Games’ and clutch moments from McCain and Ellis…..

Here is how everybody did….Dennis White at GreensboroSports.com had these numbers for us….

NG numbers:Marcus Curry with 15 points….Josh Gibson with 11…Matt Furlough with 10….Sam Hildreth with 10…Jaray McCain had 9 and Emerick chipped in 2 points…
NEG numbers:Anfernee Ellis with 17 points….Todd Withers had 16 points and 16 rebounds….Colby Martin had 10…Lamberth had 5, Jeffries 3, Jones 2 and McKinney 1 point….

What a game this was and you can listen back to it now and all next week at GreensboroSports Radio…..Check out the game and the interviews with Coach Bill Chambers, Assistant coach Ursala Williams, Jaray McCain, Anfernee Ellis and more…..

Hey the girls game was pretty good too…The Nighthawk girls won it 65-31 and they got their usual boost from Aliyah Grinage, with a good support group composed of Sydney Wilson, Sammi Furlough and others….Ariel Ellis was playing some good ball for NEG and I didn’t see or hear as much as usual from Dinah Neal(Neal pumped in 17 Ram points), but I’m sure it was there somewhere…..

A very good night for basketball at Northeast Guilford on Friday night and it is a shame that NEG didn’t have more to show for it, but there was a good crowd on hand and that usually means a good gate for the home team…..

Thanks to Coach Chris Sugg for helping to get us set up in there on Friday night and we will see these guys again next week at the Coliseum and who knows, by then Coach Curtis Hunter may be ready to go with an all-freshman backcourt and let Ellis run the wing….You never know, but we do know it will be NEG vs. NG next Thursday in Round One of the TIMCO Tournament and tonight/Friday we saw the ‘Game of the Week’ and Jaray McCain and Anfernee Ellis gave us some memories that will last until at least next week…..
