Women’s Basketball: Guilford 57, Benedictine 47

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Morgan King tallied her third double-double of the year to lift Guilford to a 57-47 win over Benedictine (Ill.) Saturday morning and a split of their two games in the Daytona Beach Shootout.

The Quakers (9-2) trailed by five midway through the first half but an 8-0 spurt gave them a lead they would not relinquish. A jumper by King pulled them within one point during the run, which also saw two buckets by Gabby Oglesby.

A layup by Oglesby gave the Quakers a 26-23 lead at intermission.

Guilford went on another run at the start of the second half, scoring nine of the first 11 points after the break. Baskets by King bookended the run, as she started the scoring off with a layup and her jumper at the 14:52 mark gave the Quakers a 35-25 lead.

Two free throws by King extended the lead to 15 and while Benedictine made a run, it was never able to get closer than four points the rest of the way.

King finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds while Lila Scott came off the bench to add 12 points. Oglesby finished with 11 points and seven boards.

Rebounding played a big role for Guilford, as it hauled in 20 offensive rebounds en route to a 52-36 edge on the glass.

Benedictine (4-7) was led by Vincenza Ranallo with 11 points.

This was the last game in 2013 for the Quakers. They return to action with an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game at Shenandoah on Tuesday, January 7th at 3:00 pm.
