84-61 with SWG boys over North Davidson….Coach Greg Vlazny….

The first day the Sheetz Holiday Classic closed with the Cowboys of Southwest hosting the Knights of North Davidson.

The game opened up and the Cowboys seemed to still be on Christmas holiday with their families. The opening frame was a sloppy back and forth with both teams trading baskets and neither team really playing under much control. The Cowboys managed to seize the lead in the final minute and took a 15-11 lead at the close of the frame.

The second quarter opened with a Cowboys basket, but it then went back and forth, with each team responding to one another’s runs. The lead eventually started to expand in favor of Southwest and took a 34-26 lead headed into the break.

The second half opened with 70 seconds that belonged to the Knights. They scored the first 5 points of the quarter making it 34-31. The Knights used some more Cowboy turnovers and turned them into points and cut the deficit to 38-37. That was to be the last momentum for North Davidson, as the Cowboys finally returned from opening Christmas presents, and used pressure defense to start pulling away from the Knights. Southwest’s swarming defense put them up 55-37 in a blink. A pair of free-throws finally broke up the run, but the damage was done. The frame ended at 58-40.

The Cowboys were able to take their feet off the gas and were able to hold off the Knights for a 84-61 victory over North Davidson.

The Knights were led by Brandon Easter with 21. Southwest was led by Kam Langley with 16, 4 Ast, 3 Rebs, 2 Stls, Ben Ferguson with 13, 5 Reb, DJ Chamblee with 11, 5 Asts, and Arjun Patel with 11, 3 Rebs, 3 Stls.

The Cowboys will face off against Thomasville tomorrow afternoon at 4:30pm.
