Elon Women’s Basketball Travels to West Virginia to Take on Mountaineers

ELON, N.C. – After a one-week break for the holiday, the Elon women’s basketball team (5-6) are back to work and ready to take on the Mountaineers of West Virginia (10-1) on Sunday, Dec. 29, in Morgantown, W.Va., in a 2 p.m. tip.

Last Time Out
Winners in three of its last four games, the Phoenix defeated Mount Olive, 84-68, in its last game on Dec. 22. Elon shot a season-high 56 percent from the field, including 42 percent from the free-throw line. The maroon and gold had four players in double figures with career highs from both Autumn Carter (25 points) and Kelsey Harris (22 points). Both players were just shy of a double-double with nine rebounds each. Zora Stephenson and Lenaira Ruffin finished with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Scouting the Mountaineers
After falling to Ohio State in its first game of the season, West Virginia has won its last 10 games for a 10-1 overall record. The Mountaineers are averaging 82.5 points a game while holding opponents to 58.6 points and winning by an average of almost 24 points. Four WVU players are scoring in double figures with Asya Bussie leading the pack with 14.2 points per game and a field goal percentage of 60.

The Series
The Mountaineers have won both previous meetings between the two teams. Elon played at WVU in back-to-back years in 2010 and 2011. This is the first time the two teams have met since the Mountaineers joined the Big 12 Conference.

Career Night
Autumn Carter had the best game of her career when she set four new career highs against Mount Olive on Dec. 22. The sophomore scored 25 points off a 9-of-14 performance from the field and also went 7-of-10 from the charity stripe. The Reidsville, N.C., native also hauled down nine boards – three offensive and six defensive.

Looking Ahead
Elon will play its last game of the 2013 calendar year at home on Tuesday, Jan. 31, against North Carolina A&T. Tip is set for 4 p.m. in Alumni Gym.
