The Cowboys of Southwest Guilford opened up the new calendar year by facing off against the Wildcats of Eastern Guilford. The Wildcats are coming in off a victory of Riverside, while the Cowboys are coming off a Sheetz Holiday Classic Championship victory over High Point Central.

The game opened up with a Cowboy 6-0 spurt, a Wildcat basket, followed by another quick 6-0 spurt, putting the game at 12-2, and then took a 16-5 advantage after the first.

The second quarter was some more Cowboy runs as the lead got pushed to 23-7. From there the teams traded baskets for several posessions, and then a quick spurt by the Wildcats cut the lead to 29-19 at the 3:09 mark. Southwest was able to respond with another run of their own and then took a 36-24 lead headed into the break.

The second half started with another Cowboy 7-0 run putting it out to 43-22. Southwest controlled the tempo and momentum for the bulk of the quarter and held a 55-34 lead headed into the final stanza.

The fourth quarter was a furious attempt by the Wildcats to claw their way back into the game. Following a 7-0 run by the visitors, Eastern had gotten it back to 58-43, by the 4:35 mark; then 58-48 by the 3:30 mark. The scoring stalled then for both teams until finally consecutive Cowboy baskets gave control back to Southwest at 62-48. Southwest held on for the 67-50 home victory.
