Greensboro College Pride Women’s Basketball Opens USA South Play With 79-66 Win

GREENSBORO, NC—The Greensboro College Pride women’s basketball team opened their USA South play with a 79-66 victory over the Hawks of Huntingdon College on Saturday afternoon.

In the first half of play, The Pride was able to jump out to an eight point lead with 16:00 minutes to go in the opening half of play at 13-5. During opening span for Greensboro, Syerra Troutman went three of three from the field to go along with a good free throw to account for seven of The Pride’s first 13 points. After Greensboro was able to jump out to the eight point lead, the Hawks responded back with a 10-0 run to take over the lead at 13-5 with 14:30 remaining in the first half of play. The score remained close for most of the next 10 minutes until The Pride went on a 10-3 run with 3:01 remaining in the half to go up by 12 at 40-28. Brandy Rush got the run started for Greensboro with four straight points, followed by a big offensive rebound and put back by Alicia Burr to continue the fire to the Greensboro team. During the last three minutes of the half, Huntingdon could not cut into the Greensboro lead. The Pride was able to extend their lead to 14 going into the half at 46-32when Burr put her shot off the glass and in as time expired.

Once the teams came back from the break, it was Greensboro continuing to pull away. Greensboro opened the second half on a 7-4 run extending their lead out to 19 points at 53-34 with 16:07 remaining in the game. Later in the half for Greensboro, Shanita Hampton scored on three straight possesions to give The Pride their largest lead of the game at 72-47 with 6:47 left. The Pride would allow Huntingdon to pull closer in the game, but was able to hold on for the 79-66.

During the game, The Pride had four players score in double figures with freshman Joslyn Spires leading the way with 17 points. Syerra Troutman and Chevena Pickard contributed 14 points, while Hampton scored all 11 of her points in the second half. Alicia Burr led the way for The Pride with nine rebounds to go along with her eight points. The Pride held a 44-35 advantage in rebounds, and also forced 35 Hawks turnovers. Greensboro was able to turn the Huntingdon miscues into 32 points to go along with their 23 second chance points. The Pride held a slight 36-32 advantage in paint points, with eight of the coming on the fast break.

With the win, The Pride moves to 5-2 on the season and 1-0 in USA South play. The Greensboro women’s basketball team will return to USA South action on Sunday afternoon when they welcome the Panthers of LaGrange College to Mayo C. Harlow Memorial Court. The tip for the game is scheduled for a 1:00 PM start.
