College Men’s Basketball Final – #18 Va. Wesleyan 84, Guilford 59

NORFOLK, Va. – Khory Moore scored a game- and career-high 21 points in 18 minutes off the bench to power Virginia Wesleyan College to an 84-59 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball win over Guilford College Saturday. The freshman made five-of-seven three-pointers, which helped the Marlins match the school record with 17 trifectas in 35 attempts (.486).

Virginia Wesleyan, ranked 18th in this week’s D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll, improved to 12-3 overall and gained a share of first place in the ODAC standings with a 5-1 mark. The Marlins dealt Guilford its first league loss and sent the Quakers to 11-4 overall, 5-1 in the ODAC.

Moore entered the game with the Marlins trailing 8-3 in the first half and reeled off 10 unanswered points during a 20-4 Virginia Wesleyan run that opened a 23-12 lead. With five minutes before halftime, Moore and Guilford both had 19 points. The hosts held a 41-32 lead at intermission.

Virginia Wesleyan’s success from beyond the arc thwarted a Quakers’ comeback in the second half. The Marlins shot eight-for-16 from three-point range in final stanza. Their 17 trifectas equal the school standard set earlier this season against the Newport News Apprentice School.

Moore paced four Marlins in double-figure scoring. Aaron Clark shot four-of-eight from three-point land and scored 12 points, as did Marlins’ All-American D.J. Woodmore. Woodmore also dished out a game-high six assists, collected five rebounds and had three steals. Sedric Nady knocked in three triples and finished with 11 points.

Senior Jake Hopkins (Kernersville, N.C./East Forsyth) paced the Quakers with 20 points and teammate Matt McCarthy added 13. Guilford outrebounded the Marlins, 40-35, led by McCarthy’s eight caroms. Trever Hyatt added 10 points for the Quakers, who made just two-of-16 three-pointers.

Guilford returns to action Wednesday (1/22) against visiting league-rival Hampden-Sydney College at 7 p.m.
