Elon Phoenix Women’s Basketball Looks to Continue Winning Ways at Furman

ELON, N.C. – Riding a three-game winning streak, the Elon women’s basketball team returns to the road this weekend to take on Furman on Saturday, Jan. 25, in Greenville, S.C. Tip is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Timmons Arena.

Last Time Out
The Phoenix extended its winning streak to three games with a 67-52 victory over Western Carolina on Sunday. Elon closed out the final 10 minutes of the game on a 22-7 run for the victory. Sam Coffer posted a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds, while Kelsey Harris led the team with 15 points. Rookie Lenaira Ruffin also scored in double digits with 11 points off three three-pointers.

Scouting the Paladins
Furman is coming off back-to-back losses on the road at Samford and Chattanooga after three straight conference wins. The Paladins are now 10-8 on the season, rank third in the league and own a positive scoring margin of 2.2. Furman has two players that rank in the top 10 in the SoCon in scoring in Holli Wilkins (fifth) and Brittany Hodges (10th), who average 14.4 and 12.4 points per game, respectively. In rebounding, Hodges pulls down 8.5 boards per game and is third in the league.

The Series
Elon has won seven of the last nine meetings and owns the overall record, 13-9. Each team won on its home court last season with Furman claiming a 74-71 victory in the last game the two teams played. The Phoenix has not won in Timmons Arena since a 58-57 win on Valentine’s Day in 2011.

Seeing Double
Sam Coffer averaged a double-double in two games last week for the Phoenix. The junior posted 11 points and 12 rebounds per game in Elon’s wins over Appalachian State and Western Carolina. She fell just short of a double-double against the Mountaineers with nine points and 12 rebounds, before completing the double box with 13 points and another 12 rebounds against the Catamounts. Coffer leads the Phoenix on the boards with 6.9 rebounds per game.

Looking Ahead
Elon will play next at Wofford in the Terriers’ annual Education Day game on Monday, Jan. 27. Tip is set for 11:30 a.m. in Spartanburg, S.C.
