  1. Hopefully they have a good showing. Unrealistic to think they could actually win this tourney but would look good for the area and state if they could at least get to the finals. I think I saw Orlando Christian was ranked in a few polls nationally as well. We will see if the Bengal D and timely offense are able to pull off a couple of W’s.

  2. Great Job GDS! Congrats to the players/coaches and staff at GDS.. I agree with “appy”, unrealistic to think a tournament championship is likely, but a second place would be huge for the school and the NCISAA..That School continues to grow year after year!! The Student athletes are well prepared for college, graduate 100%..And it is because of one thing..It’s TEACHERS!! What a great place and community! Go Bengals!

  3. This is all the Orlando Sentinel has so far….

MONTVERDE — Host Montverde Academy and Orlando Christian Prep, the top-ranked teams in the Super 16, moved one step closer to a highly anticipated boys basketball matchup.

The Eagles (20-1) fell behind by 10 points in the second quarter before overwhelming Plantation American Heritage 91-61 in the Montverde Academy Invitational Tournament on Thursday night. Earlier, OCP (22-0), the No. 1 Class 2A team in the state, was taken into overtime by Snellville (Ga.) Shiloh (13-7) before claiming a 64-59 victory.

“There still is room for improvement,” OCP coach Reggie Kohn said. “We were really sloppy tonight. When you are having a season like we are having, every once in a while, you win games when you don’t play your best.”

OCP will face the winner between Decatur, Ga., Columbia (17-2) and Greensboro, N.C., Day (22-2) in a semifinal at 6:20 tonight. Montverde will take on Philadelphia Math, Civics and Sciences in the other semifinal at 8.

Dmitri Thompson finished with a game-high 23 points and 14 rebounds for OCP.

“We played bad in the first half,” Thompson said. “We weren’t tough enough.”

Thompson gave the Warriors the lead in overtime with a put-back on an offensive rebound. Mike Tolbert, who only had two points in the first four quarters, hit a 3-pointer from the corner with 1:09 left in OT and clinched the victory with two free throws with six seconds left.

In Montverde’s victory, the Eagles fell behind the Patriots (17-6), who hit 7 of 10 3-point shots in the first half. Montverde put together an 11-2 run to end the first half and pulled away in the third quarter behind Ben Simmons, who had 24 points.

“We realized we didn’t want them to be too close for too long at our house,” Montverde Coach Kevin Boyle said. “When a game is an up-and-down game like this was, there is nobody better than Ben Simmons. He showed that tonight.”
