HIGH POINT, N.C. – Sophomore Alyssa Palenchar of the High Point University women’s track & field team has been named the Big South Women’s Field Athlete of the Week, the league announced on Wednesday. It is the second time this season that Palenchar has been tabbed for the honor.
At the Tar Heel Open on Saturday, Palenchar matched High Point’s all-time pole vault record with a mark of 3.65 meters (11-11.75). Her clearance matched the record that she set at last year’s Big South Outdoor Championship.
This is the second time this season that Palenchar has received the honor of Big South Field Athlete of the Week. She previously earned the award on Jan. 15 after setting the then HPU indoor record in the pole vault event with a mark of 3.40 meters (11-1.75). The indoor pole vault record has been re-set in three consecutive meets beginining with Palenchar’s 3.40 meters (11-1.75) at the JDL Wake Forest Invitational on Jan. 11.
HPU will return to action this weekend in Winston-Salem, N.C. at the JDL Hilton Garden Invitational. The meet will take place on both Friday and Saturday.
