Local Division I Women’s Basketball Teams Updates

Below is an update of local division one girls basketball players impact and how their teams are doing in conference and overall play

1. Florida Gulf Coast (7-0 conference & 13-6 overall) Whitney Knight (Reynolds) starter is averaging 13.9 ppg and shooting 43.2% 32/74 from the field and 84.2% freethrow in conference play. Has an overall averge of 77% from the charity stripe.Gulf Coast seems poise to run the table and make another appearance in the NCAA Tournament come March.

2. Stonybrook University ( 6-1 conference & 15-5 overall) Miranda Jenkins (Eastern Guilford) starter is averaging 9.0 ppg while shooting 47.3% from the field 26/55 and 75% 6/8 freethrow in conference play on a well balance scoring team that plays defense and rebounds extremely well. Team ranks 27th in Nation in rebounding margin and 44th in scoring defense. She has an overall 87.3% freethrow average to lead the team. Team is off to its greatest start ever. Plays conference favorite and leader Albany (17-3 & 7-0 conference)whom challenged North Carolina in the NCAA Tornament last year before falling 59-54 on Thursday January 30th on the American East Network at 7pm

3. Highpoint University ( 8-3 conference & 12-8 overall) Lindsey Puckett (Rockingham) reserve some time starter has averaged 7.1 ppg while shooting 38.8% from the field 28/72 and 77.7% freethrow 7/9. Team is in position to finish in the top three in conference play. HPU is capable of winning the Big South Tournament.

4. Winthrop University ( 8-3 conference & 14-6 overall) Ronata Rogers (Greensboro Day) reserve that is averaging 1.0 ppg. Team is considered one of the heavy favorites to challenge for conference title. They have a solid team that would not surprise anyone if they won it all. Look for them to fin finish strong.

5. North Carolina A&T University (4-2 conference & 13-4 overall) Christina Carter (Thomasville/VCU) starter is averaging is averaging 8.1 ppg on 17/53 shooting 32% and 75% freethrow on 8/12 in conference play. Kenya Hailey (Southeast Guilford) reserve with a recent start is averaging 2.6 ppg while shooting 35.3% from the field 6/17 and 10% freethrow 1/10 in conference play. The Aggies are one of the few teams that can challenge Hampton for the Meac Title.

6. Gardner Webb University (7-4 conference & 12-8 overall) Catrina Green (Western Guilford) starter is averaging 13.2 ppg while shooting 50.5% (53/105) from the field. Team is in the top half of the conference race and is off to a good start. Another Big South opponent whom could upset a few come conference tournament time. Winning the conference tournament would not come as a major surprise but would be very welcome.

7. Campbell University (7-4 conference & 12-8 overall) Amanda Coffer (Northern Guilford) reserve is averaging 3.7 ppg while shooting 46.2% from the field 6/13 and 55.6% from the charity stripe 5/9. Jessica Pone (Southwest Guilford) reserve is averaging 2.8 ppg while shooting 5/9 (55.6%) from the filed in conference play.

8. North Carolina Ashville University ( 6-5 conference & 9-11 overall) Brittany Gwynn (HP Central) starter is averaging 9.0 ppg while shooting nearly 33% from the field and 75% from the charity stripe in conference play. NCA is right in the middle of the pack in the Big South Conference and could surprise some teams come conference tournament time.

9. South Carolina Upstate University (3-3 & 8-9 overall) Brittany Clency (Western Guilford) starter is averaging 12.2 ppg while shooting 39.5% from the field 30/76 and 38.5% from the charity stripe. Upstate is having a solid year provided that they can get over the 500 overall mark. Right now they are right at it in conference play.

10. Elon University (4-5 conference & 8-12 overall) Samantha Coffer ( Northern Guilford) starter is averaging 7.1 ppg while shooting 41.9% (26/62 ) and 72.7% free throw 16/22. Autumn Carter (Rockingham) reserve is averaging 1.7 ppg while shooting 21% 4/19 and 66% ft (4/6) in conference play. Lenaira Ruffin (River Mill Academy) reserve is averaging 3.3 ppg while shooting 34.4% (10/29) and 100% (2-2) from the charity stripe in conference play. Team has had some close losses and needs to get on a roll.

11. UNCG University (1-8 conference and 5-15 overall) Breonna Patterson(Dudley) ireserve is averaging 4.4 ppg and shooting 29.6% in conference play. Team has played better than record shows and are building for future growth.

12. Radford University (1-10 conference & 3-17 overall) Kierra McIvor (Dudley) starter is averaging 7.4 ppg while shooting 38.9% and 60% (9/15 freethrows) in conference play. Team is playing much better and could knock off a team in conference tournament play provided they do not go up against the top tier teams in the conference. Finishing strong with at least 4 to 5 conference wins could be a step in the right direction. Last year they were at least at the even mark on wins and losses.
