OCP(Orlando Christian Prep) was the #1 ranked 2-A team in the state of Florida and they were (22-0) coming into this game.

GDS vs. Montverde in the final on Saturday night at 7:30pm. Montverde is right at (21-1) and they are the #4 ranked team in the Nation. Most of the fans down that way were expecting to see Orlando Christian Prep vs. Montverde in the finals, but Greensboro Day had other plans/ideas for that final.

(We will try and get more info from the Orlando Sentinnel as time allows).

This report courtesy of Greensboro Day assistant coach Johnny Richardson.

UPDATE: The Final Game will be available on the Montverde Academy Pay Per View TV Channel (I guess they never heard of UStream or YouTube.) The cost for 12 Hours of viewing is $10.00. More details here.

  1. From the Orlando Sentinel…Way to go Bengals…Some National Respect….

MONTVERDE — Matching Montverde Academy against a typical high-school team in boys basketball can look like the old Harlem Globettrotters toying with their punching bag of an opponent, the beleaguered Washington Generals.

Friday night had that feel, with a big crowd at Montverde treated to a display of dunks by the reigning national champion Eagles (21-1) in a 92-51 rout of overmatched Math, Civics and Sciences (9-10) of Philadelphia at the Montverde Academy Invitational Tournament.

The Elephants were easy prey for a squad that has six Division I signees and a 6-foot-9 junior who is rated the best of the bunch.

Montverde’s 13 dunks and 9-of-16 shooting from 3-point range alone would have been good for a victory in the second semifinal.

The elite junior, 6-foot-8 Ben Simmons, joined Jordan Caroline, Justin Bibbs, Chris Egi and Makinde London in the slam show. The final flush was on an alley-oop dunk thrown straight down by 7-foot-4 junior reserve Jean Marc Christ Koumadje¿.

Ohio State signee D’Angelo Russell made fouir treys and joined Simmons with a game-high 16 points.

Orlando Christian Prep’s hopes of taking a perfect record into an all-Central Florida final against Montverde were derailed in a 63-59 loss to Greensboro Day (24-2) of North Carolina in the first semifinal.

The defeat for the Class 2A top-ranked Warriors (22-1) also may have eliminated hopes of other prizes that had crept into conversations, such as a top-10 national ranking and Florida’s second bid to the National High School Invitational at Madison Square Garden.

“When you’re 22-0, you think about trying to keep it going and things that may come along with that,” OCP coach Reggie Kohn said. “But what we really focus on is our district tournament [next week] and the state playoffs. This tournament makes us better.”

Adonys Henriquez, a 6-foot-5 UCF signee, was 6-of-10 from 3-point land and scored a game-high 24 points for OCP.

The Warriors trailed by 10 early in the fourth quarter, but pulled to 53-52 when Henriquez and Mike Tolbert made consecutive 3-point shots and Henriquez added two free throws with 56.1 seconds left.

OCP’s hopes were snuffed out when Bengals guards Bryan Souse and Darius Moore combined to make 10 of 10 free throws in the final 36 seconds.

Montverde will face Greensboro Day for the championship at 7:30 tonight. OCP will play for third place at 5:50 p.m.

  2. Like I said previously it is not realistic for GDS to win this tourney but we would find out a lot about them during it. Obviously would have loved to have seen that game last night. This team continues to amaze people and prove everyone wrong. If I am not mistaken Orlando Christian is the same team that easily handled HP Christian earlier in the year. When was the last time a Guilford County team knocked off a nationally ranked team? What an amazing season these kids are having. 5 new starters. Not even I saw this coming.

  3. Appy,

The games are available for viewing on the Montverde’s Video Hub. It will cost you $10 and while it is not ESPN, the quality is decent. The web address is: http://www.montverde.tv

Tonight will be tough, but enjoy and GO BENGALS!

  4. It sounds like this Florida team is loaded with superior height (a 7’4″ junior that is a reserve player – c’mon). It appears the only way GDS will survive is have the superior guard play, be faster than the other team and drain 3 pts on demand. The GDS defense will obviously be key but anything 6’9″ or better in the middle is a huge problem for GDS with only a few 6’4″ to 6’6″ guys. The GDS team has been playing with an extra element this year that was present last year but that team run out of stream in the state finals – “heart”. This team is playing like they are the underdog every night (which they are) but they are laying it all on the line every single night. When a team plays like that you know they are buying into the system, playing for themselves and the coaching staff. I have only seen Fred coach for about 10 years but this is his best coaching job in those 10 years. Good Luck GDS.

  5. It is funny how the article don’t even talking about the GDS team. It was all about the Orlando teams. GDS should take that as a slap in the face. It is amazing how often the front runners can lose site of their goals by overlooking “weaker” or “unknown” teams. Maybe GDS will be underestimated again. Sometime you just have to hit someone in the mouth or their pride to get their attention. NC has a strong history of good teams and extremely good players. Maybe Florida teams should remember that before assuming how they will play in and win the championship.

  6. Recap Article Below…GDS should be ranked Nationally…

It might not be the game many area basketball fans were hoping for, but today’s championship game at the Montverde Academy Invitational Tournament undoubtedly will pit the two best teams against each other.

Montverde Academy, as expected, and Greensboro (N.C.) Day School secured spots in the title tilt with victories on Friday in semifinal action on the Mills Championship Court in the Montverde Academy fieldhouse.

Greensboro Day improved to 24-2 with a 63-59 win against previously unbeaten Orlando Christian Prep and Montverde Academy (21-1), winners of the last two MAIT titles, coasted into the finals with a 92-51 win against Philadelphia Math, Civics and Sciences Charter School.

Montverde Academy scored the first basket of the game in the opening seconds and never looked back. One night after trailing by as many as 10 points against Plantation American Heritage before winning by 30, Montverde Academy coach Kevin Boyle went to the whip early against the Elephants and never let up.

The Eagles clearly were the better team and scored at will against the Elephants (8-12). Montverde Academy used its size advantage to play above the rim and score on countless dunks and alley-oops, each of which ignited the Eagles’ student body, which worked itself into frenzy as the game wore on.

After maintaining a 15- to 17-point advantage for most of the first half, the Eagles ratcheted up their defensive intensity and turned it into 15-0 run to close out the second quarter and take a 56-26 lead at halftime.

Montverde Academy led by as many at 48 in the third quarter and a running clock was used beginning late in the third quarter.

Boyle emptied his bench early in the fourth quarter, bringing in Jean Marc Christ Koumadje, the Eagles’ 7-foot-4 junior center.

Ben Simmons led Montverde Academy with 17 points, followed by D’Angelo Russell with 16. Justin Bibbs added 11, while Chris Egi and Makinde London scored 10 points apiece.

For the Elephants, Samir Doughty led the way with 16 points and Tyrese Hester added nine.

Greensboro Day locked up its spot in the title game by sinking 10 straight free throws in the final 48 seconds to hold off a furious charge by the Warriors (22-1). Adonys Henriquez hit four 3 pointers in the fourth quarter to spark OCP, which trailed by as many a 10 points.

Bryan Rouse and Darius Moore did the work from the charity stripe for the Bengals in the final minute.

Orlando Christian Prep had its hands full with the Bengals from the start. Greensboro Day matched up favorably with the Warriors on the perimeter and in the paint. Peter Agba, the Bengals’ 6-foot-6 center, used his mobility to consistently keep himself between the basket and Henriquez and Jonathan Joseph, OCP’s tallest starters at 6-foot-6 and 6-foot-5, respectively.

Agba created numerous second-shot opportunities for the Bengals and forced the Warriors to alter their shots in the paint. He contributed with four points in the first half and became even more of a force in the second half, working the baseline for six points in the third quarter as Greensboro Day built a 40-32 advantage heading in the fourth.

With its five-guard alignment, OCP was more effective from the perimeter and struggled when it was forced to be more deliberate on offense.

Brandon Maxwell, the son of former University of Florida great Vernon Maxwell, kept the Warriors in the game with nine first-half points.

In the second half, Henriquez kept the Warriors in the game with his long-range shooting, scoring nine of the Warriors’ 13 points in the third quarter.

Early in the fourth quarter, Greensboro Day its largest lead of the game (42-32) on a pair of free throws by Trevor Mayo. The Warriors responded with seven-straight points, including a 3 pointer by Maxwell to cut the lead to three points.

Rouse led Greensboro Day with 18 points, followed by Moore with 16. The pair combined to go 16-of-19 from the free throw line.

Henriquez paced OCP with 24 points, followed by Maxwell with 19.

In other action on Friday, Decatur (Ga.) Columbia topped Snellville (Ga.) Shiloh 61-56 and Plantation American Heritage picked up a 74-50 win against Ocala Vanguard.

Today’s schedule, which begins at 2:30 p.m., will pit Snellville (Ga.) Shiloh against Ocala Vanguard in the first game of the day, and Decatur (Ga.) Columbia squares off against Plantation American Heritage at 4:10.

In the tournament’s third-place contest, OCP will play Philadelphia Math, Civics and Sciences Charter School at 5:50 p.m.

Tickets for today’s action is $10 and parking is $5.
