Grasshoppers Announce Coaching Staff for 2014

(Greensboro, NC) The Miami Marlins announced that David Berg will be the manager for the 2014 Greensboro Grasshoppers.

Berg will be joined by returning hitting coach Frank Moore and pitching coach Jeremy Powell. Ben Cates will be returning for his second season as Athletic Trainer. Trevor Ging will return as the strength and conditioning coach.

2014 marks a return for Berg at the helm of the Greensboro Grasshoppers. He spent last season as the Infield Instructor for the Miami Marlins minor leagues. Berg is not a stranger to Greensboro; he was the Grasshoppers manager during the 2012 season. His professional coaching career started with the Marlins after a seven year Major League career.

Berg was selected by the Marlins out of the University of Miami in the 38th round of the 1993 First-Year Player Draft. When he made his Major League debut for the Marlins on April 2, 1998, he became the lowest-ever draft pick by Florida to reach the Major Leagues. He hit a career best for the Marlins in 1998 with a .313 average. Following the 2001 season, Berg signed with Toronto where he played for three seasons. Berg finally retired following the 2006 season.

Jeremy Powell is entering his third season with the Marlins organization. Prior to this year, he served as the Pitching Coach for the Gulf Coast League Marlins.

Prior to his coaching career, he spent two years in the Pirates’ Minor League system pitching for Triple-A Indianapolis. Powell played abroad in Japan for Nippon Professional Baseball from

2001-08. He also spent seven years in the Minor Leagues in the Expos’ and Padres’ organizations.

Frank Moore enters his third year as the Greensboro Grasshoppers’ hitting coach. Prior to coaching for the Grasshoppers he spent one year with the Jupiter Hammerheads and two years with Jamestown in the same capacity. Before being named Jamestown hitting coach, he played with the Albuquerque Isotopes in 2007.

Moore was originally drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in 1998 out of Middle Georgia Junior College. He saw time with Marlins’ affiliates in Jupiter, Carolina and Albuquerque from 2005-07.
