Game Report on Southwest Guilford and Ragsdale Boys

Courtesy of Coach Greg Vlazny with SWG:

For the second time around this season, city and conference rivals squared off when the Cowboys of Southwest faced off against the Tigers of Ragsdale. In the first matchup the Cowboys controlled the game until an aggressive push in the final quarter cut the final deficit to the final tally of 81-66 in favor of the Cowboys.

Tonight’s matchup was at Ragsdale with both teams trying to keep momentum as the regular season is rapidly coming to the end.

The opening tip was to a very loud and active crowd on both sides of the gym. The Tigers came out strong and confident after a convincing victory over Glenn. They rode that momentum to storm ahead 21-9, and then shortly thereafter the frame ended with the hosts up 23-10.

The second quarter was the mirror image of the first as it was the Cowboys who came out strong and decisive as they slowly chipped away and eventually took the lead for the first time of the night with under a minute to play with a 3 point play taking the tally to 33-32 headed into halftime.

The second half turned out to be the exact same roller coaster ride. The third quarter was the Tigers turn to take back all momentum and energy as they stormed back ahead and held control by taking a strong 52-40 lead.

The final quarter was when the Cowboys woke back up and started the frame strong by scoring the first 7points. By the 4:00 minute mark it was down to 54-49. Southwest upped the tempo with pressure and forced several turnovers in a row and tied the ball game at 55 with just 3:20 to go. Following another key stop, Southwest scored 5 straight points in a matter seconds to take their largest lead of the entire game at 60-55. Some poor free throw shooting kept the Cowboys from taking complete control early, and the Tigers used those misses to keep the game tight. Ragsdale got as close as 62-57, but Southwest managed to hit enough free throws and force very key turnovers in the final minute to stretch the final score to 70-62.

Ragsdale was led by James Stepp with 27. Southwest was led by KJ Langley with 24, 4 Ast, 2 Stl, and Arjun Patel with 10, 3 Stl, 2 Reb.
