Elon’s Beaumont Reaches Milestone in Win Over UNCG Men’s Basketball

ELON, N.C. – Ryley Beaumont scored his 1,000th career point and went for 14 points and nine boards to lead Elon to a 72-66 win over the UNCG Spartans on Thursday night, Feb. 6, inside Alumni Gym.

Beaumont becomes the fourth Elon player to reach the 1,000-point milestone, joining teammates Lucas Troutman, Jack Isenbarger and Sebastian Koch in the exclusive club. Elon, winners of three straight, improves to 13-11 (6-3 Southern Conference) with the win.

“We are happy to come out with a victory,” said Elon head coach Matt Matheny. “I thought tonight was one of our better performances defensively. I felt like we defended in good times and in bad times. Our goal every game is to keep the opposing team under 40 percent and we were able to do that.”

Elon limited the Spartans to 36 percent shooting from the field, including a 28 percent performance in the game’s first 20 minutes. UNCG went without a three-point field goal make (0-for-6) in the opening frame and ended the night 2-of-13 from long distance. UNCG held its own defensively, too, limiting Elon to a 2-of-20 clip from long range.

The Phoenix put four in double figures including Beaumont. Troutman and Kevin Blake ended the night with 13 points apiece, while Sebastian Koch pitched in 11.

Elon won the battle on the boards, 46-41, improving to 8-2 on the year when it outrebounds the opposition.

Koch pushed the Phoenix out to a 33-19 lead with less than four minutes remaining in the opening frame after connecting from beyond the arc to give his team momentum and force a UNCG timeout.

Elon carried a 35-25 lead into the half, as the Phoenix shot 42 percent from the field and limited the Spartans to a 28 percent clip.

The Spartans made it a two-point game with 13:28 to play after Kyle Cain knocked down two from the free throw line to limit Elon to a 41-39 edge. UNCG took the lead just over a minute later after a Tyrone Outlaw old-fashioned three-point play put Elon behind, 44-41.

But the Phoenix fired back, as Blake completed a three-point play of his own following an Isenbarger basket to give Elon a 48-44 edge.

Elon went back up by as many as nine, as the Spartans could pull no closer than three points down the stretch.

The Phoenix hosts Georgia Southern on Saturday, Feb. 8, at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcasted live on ESPN3.
