Game Report: East Forsyth vs Southwest Guilford Boys Basketball

Emotions were riding high as the Cowboys of Southwest hosted the Eagles of East Forsyth on Senior Night here at the Ranch. The last time these two teams squared off came down to the wire. The Cowboys came out flat and couldn’t buy a basket and turned it over more in the first half than they average for an entire game. That spotted the Eagles a 21-7 lead after the first. The Cowboys came storming back in the second half and even took the lead with just under 20 seconds left, but lost on a jumper with just 8 seconds left. The Cowboys were hoping to not only exact some revenge, but also keep hope alive to tie for a share of the regular season Conference title.

The game started back and forth with the teams trading baskets and the lead. The Cowboys went on a quick 6-0 spurt to get a 10-4 lead. Following an Eagles basket, the Cowboys then scored 7 straight getting it out to 17-6 at the 3:15 mark. The Eagles showed why they had only lost 1 game all season by responding with an 11-2 run thanks in part to 3 staight Cowboy turnovers to take cut the lead to 19-17 at the close of the frame.

The Eagles weren’t done with the momentum either, scoring the first 7 points of the second quarter as well taking a 24-19 lead at the 6:28 mark. The Cowboys shaked off the rust, and responded with 6 straight to regain the lead at 25-24. The Eagles quickly responded with a 3 pointer and it continued to be a tick for tack quarter until Southwest took a 31-29 lead. On the ensuing possession a Southwest 3-pointer kept the momentum on the hosts’ side, and the run continued until it was 38-31. An East Forsyth 3-pointer of their own and a couple more SW baskets took the mark to 42-34 going into the break in favor of the Cowboys.

The second half opened with a 3-pointer by Senior Andrew Bullock to make it 45-34, but the Eagles like they have done all season responded with a run that would tie the game at 47 at the 1:55 mark. The final minute was a dogfight of trading even baskets and ending with the game all square at 51.

The final quarter opened on the same thread with the Eagles opening it up first taking a 53-51 lead, but it was short lived as the Cowboys drained a 3-pointer to reclaim the lead for the briefest of moments as the Eagles proceeded to hit a 3 of their own to take a 56-54 lead. That turned out to be the last lead of the night for East Forsyth as the Cowboys really stiffled the opposition. After tying the ball game, a critical hoop and harm by Tyliek Brister gave the Cowboys a 59-56 lead at the 5:00 mark. The Eagles were able to score, but back-to-back 3-pointers by the Cowboys took it to 67-60, then a steal and another 3-point play took it to 70-60. Southwest used a great team defensive effort, especially from the Senior class to ride out a nice 79-66 victory over East Forsyth.

The Eagles were led by Brandon Childress with 12. The Cowboys were led by Kameron Langley with 15, 2 Stls, 2 Asts, and Tyliek Brister with 12, 4 Rebs, 3 Asts, 2 Stls. Southwest also got great contributions from the Senior Class not only tonight but for the entire season. Thank you and congratulations to the Senior Class of 2014 of the Cowboys.
