Greensboro College Pride Softball Splits on Day One of Emory 3 and 2

ATLANTA, GA — The Greensboro College softball team opened their 2014 campaign with a two game split at Emory on Saturday afternoon. The Pride fell in the first game to host Emory 18-0 before coming back with a 6-4 victory against the Royals of Eastern Mennonite in the second game of the day.

The Pride came back from the rough first game at the play, getting on the board in the second inning of the game against the Royals. Rae Hall collected two RBIs when her single found the left field grass scoring Madison Crisco and Sarah Tompkins giving Greensboro an early 2-0 lead.

The score would remain the same until Eastern Mennonite was able to take a 4-2 lead after the top half of the fourth inning. However, Greensboro was able to come back and tie the game in the bottom of the fifth scoring two runs. Kierstin Mckenna got the inning started with a walk, before Jackie Nicholson reached on a Royals error allowing Mckenna to advance all the way to third base and Nicholson to second. Sarah Connolly made the error work in her favor finding the center field grass singling home the first run of the inning before Tompkins plated Nicholson with a routine ground out to the pitcher tying the game.

Greensboro was able to find the board once again in the sixth inning of play. Rae Hall opened up the inning with her second hit of the game before scoring on a Chelsea Brewer single putting the Pride up 5-4. Greensboro would find the scoring column one last time when Mckenna scored Brewer with her only hit of the game giving the Pride the 6-4 lead. Greensboro only allowed one Royal to reach base in the top of the seventh holding on for the win.

Freshman Lauren Miller (1-0) picked up the win in game two for the Pride tossing three scoreless innings while only allowing two hits. Rae Hall led the way for Greensboro going 2 of 3 at the plate with 2 RBIs in the game.

In the first game of the day, Sarah Thompkins had two of Greensboro’s three hits in the game. Kelsey Sanfilippo (0-1) took the loss in the circle for the Pride.
