Slow Start Affects Greensboro College Women’s Basketball in 79-56 Loss

ROCKY MOUNT, NC—The Pride women’s basketball teams suffered a setback by North Carolina Wesleyan with a 79-56 defeat on Saturday afternoon. Greensboro six game USA South winning streak was snapped with the loss.

The Battling Bishops scored the first 21 points of the game over 11:09, before a Shanita Hampton free throw got The Pride on the board trailing 21-1. With Greensboro facing their largest deficit of the half at 27, Alexis Hite nailed a jumper starting a 6-0 run making it 37-16 with 4:34 showing on the clock. North Carolina Wesleyan halted the run and controlled the remainder of the half, taking a 47-22 lead into the break.

Coming out of the break, both teams traded baskets over the first 10:00 minutes with the Battling Bishops still holding a firm 69-37 lead. Over the next two minutes, Joslyn Spires sparked a 9-2 run getting The Pride their closest defecit at 71-46 with 8:03 remaining. Down the stretch Greensboro outscored their opponents 10-8, but that was not enough falling 79-56.

Greensboro out rebounded their opponents 53-51 on the day, with 24 of those coming on the offensive glass. The Pride defense forced 25 turnovers, while having nine steals.

Three players reached double digits with Spires and Hampton leading the way with 11 points and Syerra Troutman close behind with ten points. Troutman had a team high eight rebounds, five of those on the offensive boards. Kamia Strickland led the defense with three steals.

With the loss, Greensboro falls to 15-5 overall, and 11-3 in the USA South. The Pride will look to rebound tomorrow when they welcome Methodist University to Mayo C. Harlow Court. The tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
