Last Time Out
Elon picked up a 65-61 win in Cullowhee, N.C., against Western Carolina on Saturday. The first half was tight with neither team taking more than a four-point lead before the Phoenix grabbed a six-point advantage at the break. Elon stormed out to a 10-0 run to start the second frame and led by as much as 13 before WCU cut it to a two-point game with only 10 seconds left. On the next possession, Sam Coffer was fouled and made both chances at the line to give the Phoenix the four-point victory.
Scouting the Mountaineers
Appalachian State enters Monday’s game with a 10-14 overall record and a 7-7 record in conference play. The Mountaineers defeated UNCG 76-67 on Saturday after dropping two league games at Chattanooga and Samford prior. ASU leads the SoCon in rebounding margin with a +6 mark against opponents, while averaging 62.5 points per game. Junior Maryah Sydnor leads the team and the conference by putting up 19.6 points per game along with a team-high 8.8 rebounds/game. Also averaging in double figures is KeKe Cooper with 10.2 ppg.
The Series
The Mountaineers hold a strong advantage in the all-time series, 21-11, but Elon has won the last two meetings, including a 66-54 win in Alumni Gym earlier this year. The Phoenix has not won in Boone since a 73-55 final on Feb. 9, 2009.
NCAA Rankings
The NCAA released its latest set of rankings on Feb. 14 and Elon finds itself ranked eighth nationally in three-point field goal percentage with a 38.5 percent mark from beyond the arc (first in the league) and 20th in blocked shots per game (5.2/game).
The 1,000-Point Club
Kelsey Harris is on her way to becoming the 20th member of Elon women’s basketball’s 1,000-point club. The senior currently has 980 career points, leaving her just 20 shy of the elite mark. The Gastonia, N.C., native is averaging 12.3 points per game.
