Elon Men’s Baseball Phoenix Completes Sweep of Cincinnati With 3-1 Victory

RALEIGH, N.C. — Jake Stalzer allowed one unearned run over seven innings to lead the Elon Phoenix to a 3-1 victory over Cincinnati at Doak Field at Dail Park as the maroon and gold completed the two-game sweep of the Bearcats on Monday.

Stalzer (1-0) was solid for the Phoenix (2- 0) to earn the win. After allowing an unearned run in the first inning, Stalzer did not allow another run. He scattered six hits, walked two and struck out four. Matt Harris struck out one and gave up one hit in a scoreless ninth to earn his first career save.

Trailing 1-0 after a half inning, the Elon offense responded with a two-run spurt in the last of the first. Casey Jones and Sebastian Gomez each drew one-out walks before Ryan Cooper singled to right to plate Jones. The Phoenix then pulled off a double-steal to score the second run.

Elon added an insurance run in the fourth when Cooper scored on Danny Crowe’s sacrifice fly.

Cooper led Elon at the plate, recording two of the team’s three hits on the day.

Cincinnati (0-2) starter Mitch Patishall (0-1) took the loss after giving up all three runs on just two hits in 4.0 innings.

Elon will return home to Latham Park to face sixth-ranked NC State at 5 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon.
